Can this possibly be right?

We've got one and certainly don't live Puerto Rico. We live in Canada and always have. We've had it for about 3 years now. I don't know if it is available to everyone but it is available.

I work for Scotia and we certainly do not have a US credit card. Not sure if you have a business one?

Nope not a business one -- we're retired. It is through our Scotiabank private banking account. And it most certainly exists, lol. I have it in my wallet, so it obviously exists.

Yes, those pre-paid visas or mastercards are not that great, IMO. We got some pre-paid mastercards as gifts for Christmas, and they were a pain to use. The first time they were used, they were denied at a restaurant because even though they were 50.00 cards, they can only be used on a cheque of less than 20% that the limit at a restaurant or salon, etc., so you can leave an appropriate tip. Huh? So on a 50.00 one, you can only spend 40.00 at a restaurant. Seriously!

Prepaids are not good at all for associated costs...

When you buy one, you are charged an activation fee, then if you don't use within a certain amount of time, you are charged monthly service fees.

So, OP didn't read the fine print on using a product that she got to help her with her financial issues, and it actually cost her a pretty penny to do so.

Good old fashioned US Visa, and many of our banks do have them. Hubby is a bank manager, and most, if not all Canadian banks have US credit cards nowadays. They also usually carry travel insurance too!

Yes, I just paid $198CAD for a $200USD deposit. They make those prepaid Visa cards sound like such good deals, I guess I now know where they make their money, since they can't charge interest fees! Outrageous!!!!:scared1:

We paid the same amount, and it was on our Westjet MC, I think that your credit card company is over charging you exchange, contact them.

I agree, it must be the fees associated with the prepaid Visa. Usually once our dollar hit $1.03 US, you're @ par, as it covers the 2-3% the CC charges for the conversion. If a standard CC is not something you're comfortable with, I don't see the point of a US Visa. You're probably better sending them a money order as a Alderbrook said.

Ah! Private banking! :) Not available to the general public..not yet at least;)

RBC also have a USD Visa and have for some time , I have one plus I have another one with RBC Centura as well as an Orlando bank acct. Really--everything I need I can easily do with my USD account and USD Visa here. Only opened the Florida one for ease when my daughter was working in Fla.:confused3

Private banking is available to the general public if they want to pay for it. But, that's why I said the card may not be available to everybody.

So, my Scotiabank USD credit card does exist though?;)

Just a quick update to this:

I checked my balance on my prepaid today and I have a $132.00 credit. When I checked my transaction history, it showed an $878.85 Visa settlement and a $26.54 Foreign transaction fee. Looking at the terms and conditions a little closer, it turns out there is a 3% conversion rate on foreign transactions, which I'm quite ok with. It appears that they pre-auth a bit more for some reason, although it does not state that in the terms. But at least that makes me feel a lot better, I'm confident in using the card again. :goodvibes
