I think my use year will not work for me, if I understand how it works. My use year is December. Therefore, I must bank by July 31. I usually vacation in September, October and/or November. So, if I must cancel a vacation after the July 31 date, I would not be able to bank it. If this is correct, I would like to change my use year. I was told by my agent that the use year was not important. It seems that it could cause me a potential problem.

To change it, you would have to sell and re-buy. The use year is directly tied to the property you are deeded.

Crud! Sounds like you got a bad guide unfortunately. :sad1:
When I first spoke to my guide, she went to length to understand my vacation habits. Once she knew that, she realized that the use year they were currently selling (December) would not be the most advantageous to me. She recommended several other months and verified availability of them during the same meeting. Heck, she even checked availability of VWL as a home resort since she knew WL was my favorite. In fact, I jokingly told here I would buy right then and there if she offered VWL with the incentives!
My guide did a fantastic job!

Sadly, I don't think you have any options to correct a use year. I suspect you would have to prove you were offered something else in order to back out of a legally binding contract. The guide was just careless, not malicious or fraudulent.

When did you sign your paperwork? You have 10 days to back out of your purchase. If you are still inside that window, you could ask your guide for a different UY.

Thanks for your replies! I signed my contract in June, so I am beyond the 10 day window.

I thought I did my homework and read and understood everything about DVC ownership. My agent even said that she did not understand what all the fuss on the internet about the UY. She said it was no big deal; it only determined when you received your points for the year. Boy, she did me a disservice. Hopefully, I will never have to cancel a vacation.

The problem is a bit more pronounced with the new banking deadlines than it used to be. The good thing is that in 11 years of membership, we have never been caught needing to cancel late enough to cause a problem, and we always travel in a time period that is right before our use year, so it COULD be a problem should we ever need to cancel.
