Can the United States win the World Cup?

a solid team in comparison to previous US teams yes, but not so much compared to many of the other countries.

Compared to England, Italy, Brazil, France ect... we don't stack up. Not to mention our first bracket has the England team in it so I am not sure we will get past that. We just don't have the support for the sport that other countries have. If it is not Football (American), Baseball, or Basketball a good number of American's don't care. We don't have the training in place to keep up with the larger clubs and countries. It's nothing against our players, but we don't support the game enough.

Is it possible? Well anything is possible...

To the best of my knowledge, the US hasn't placed in the Men's World Cup since 1930, where they beat Yugoslavia to get Third Place (Note, there was no actual third place match in 1930, but US is considered the third place team based off of their overall record at the games).

If a team like North Korea can make it to the World Cup, then yes, a solid team like the U.S. can win.

Sure, the competition is going to be tough from the outset, but this will not be a walkover for any of the teams. And quite a few of the European teams have recently been suffering losses due to injuries.

A solid team with Jonathan Spector in it? I think not. He played for my club last year (West Ham) and he was the worst player in the Premiership.

Once you get out of the group stage anything is possible. Any team can out play any other team in a knock out competition, just look at last summer's Confederations Cup. We managed to beat Spain and out played Brazil for 45 minutes before collapsing.

I think winning the whole thing is beyond us because we would have to beat too many teams that are just better then us but it can happen if we get a LOT of luck. I think we are in the second tier of teams as far as talent goes so while unlikely we have a better chance then countries like North Korea or Greece. If we can top our group we can possibly make it to a semi final and that would be quite an accomplishment. I have a Spain V. Brazil final in my bracket.

If you all remember the 2002 World Cup in South Korea, the USA came out and beat Portugal which was one of the biggest upsets in World Cup History. We then advanced the Round of 16, and whooped Mexico 2-0. Then we squared off against Germany and unfortunately Germany beat us 1-0, but it was a game that the US probably should have won. There was an obvious missed handball which should have resulted in a penalty kick. Also the US missed a point blank header with about 2 minutes left to play. That would have put us in the Semis against South Korea and the U.S. would have won that game! Which have put us in the Finals against Brazil. I believe the team we have now is stronger than that team.

Is it likely that the USA will win? Of course not. Is it possible? Most definitely!
