Can the Republicans Win in 2008?

Hey...I wasn't calling anyone "ignorant" (what is it with assuming things I haven't said today? :confused3 ). If anything, I was implying that they were a little hypocritical, considering their criticism of Hollywood and actors, but that was it. It was just a little tweak at them for constantly attacking "Hollyweird" then falling all over themselves for an actor. :)

ETA: lol...just realized I did what I was accusing you of doing. I thought you were referring to my comments about Reagan, but upon re-reading realized you said the way they "were" condemned, so you were probably referring back to 1980, right? If so...my sincere apologies. :teeth:

And if Affleck should for some reason choose to come to his wife's home state to run for office, I would be the first in line to volunteer for his campaign. I have been flat out amazed at how well he communicates his beliefs and how intelligent he truly is. Between his personality, his politics, and his public appeal, he would be a candidate I could easily support. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I was referring to the 80's, not you. I completely agree with the current situation. They bash hollywood actors and now they're running to one because everyone else they've got is a loser. I haven't really looked at Thompson on the issues yet, so I can't really say how I feel about him. I would need to see how he voted when he was in the Senate.

I saw Affleck on Bill Maher the other night and he really was good. He would probably do very well in MA if he ran for Senate.

Just an aside, but does anyone remember where Kerry stood at this time in 2003? Wasn't he like 3rd or 4th at this point?

Have you seen the latest polls? It appears the Christian right is willing to put aside Giuliani's personal idiosyncracies for political gain? Whoa, never saw that coming. :lmao:

However, what will the Republicans get in Giuliani? They'll get a NY Republican who's really a Democrat. It's almost a win/win for Democrats. ;)

Yes, and most of us southern Republicans are intelligent enough to know this. We won't be spending our time yapping and clapping for Giuliani or anyone else. What we (no me personally, but my demographic) will do is stay home on election day. Thus my prediction of a landslide victory for whoever the Dem nominee is. The parrot from PotC could win the Dem nomination and be elected in 2008... and the monkey could be veep. It truly does not matter because there is no GOP candidate currently offically in the running who can bring these hundreds of electoral votes to the polls in 2008. If the Dems screw this one up, it will be mind-boggling.

That's the thing. Arthur Branch would be a heck of a candidate. People would vote for that guy. However, he can't run. He's fictional.

The guy who can run is Fred Thompson - Washington lobbyist and Hollywood actor. I've yet to see anything from Fred Thompson about why he should be elected President.

Thompson has basically gotten involved in one political issue over the past few years - trying to get a pardon for Scooter Libby. With all the conservative causes to choose from, that's the one he's put the most effort into. Somehow I don't see how getting a pardon for a guy who lied to the FBI about his outing of a covert CIA agent being at the top of voter's issue list. It certainly wouldn't be at the top of Arthur Branch's.

Maybe there's a great candidate there. But so far, we haven't seen it.

How many people would've voted for "Jed Bartlett"? ;)

Nope -- I'm purely an Arnold Vinick man ;) :thumbsup2 :goodvibes :lmao:
Put me down for A.D.A. Abbie Carmichael. To be honest, I've never seen a full episode of her on L&O. But if we are going to elect people for being likable actors - come on - who wouldn't want Angie Harman as President. Not to mention the fun of having Jason Sehorn as first husband. The guy's a 3-times Superstars champion. That alone should get him a gig in the White House.

who wouldn't want Angie Harmon as President.

Yum.

Not to mention the US would conquer the world as all the other world leaders would be too busy drooling and sign onto anything we asked.

You know, Arnie was a Republican I could get behind without feeling like I totally sold my soul!

Yanno, I do so miss that show. I think the IQ of television in general dropped about 20 points when it went off the air........

Agreed on all counts. :thumbsup2 If I could wish nothing else in my lifetime of political involvement, it would be for a candidate like Jed Bartlett to stand a real chance in an election, and for his opponent to be someone worthy of the office. To paraphrase Leo, I'm tired of voting for the lesser of "who cares."

If Gore had followed Toby's advice in back in 2000, he'd have won in a landslide. :teeth:

And Jed likewise as a Democrat. :thumbsup2

Although, I think your logic is backwards -- I think the show went off the air because the IQ of the television watching public had already dropped 20 points since when it began. ;)

You can't look at that way Mugg. It may be a 20 point loss in your book, but when you compare to the sizable IQ gains that were made when 90210, Melrose Place, and most of the so called reality shows went off the air, it all evens out.:lmao:

Hey, I can remember back in the early to mid 80's when the Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Charlie's Angels, and the Dukes of Hazzard were all canceled around the same time. You could actually feel America getting smarter.:rotfl2:

Are you proposing that Aaron Spelling was actually a Communist plot?

Hmmmm.....it actually would explain a whole lot of things......

Correct me if I'm wrong here - but you've never met the woman, never talked to her, aren't friends with any of her friends or family. And yet somehow you know - not just think but *know* - what makes her tick. I don't see it.

What exactly is your familiarity with Hill that gives you this incite. Have you read her books? Listened to her speak - full speeches, not just snippets?

I have a tough time figuring out what motivates people I've known all my life and have spent endless hours talking this over with. I can't image being able to know what motivates someone I don't know.

Have you met her???

Mugg, You just made me realise that Aaron Spelling made all those shows except for the Dukes of Hazzard. What a terrible legacy to leave the world. First those shows, then he gave us Tori Spelling as his lasting curse.:scared1:

As for the Communist plot theory, if he would have been responsible for BJ and the Bear, along with Knight Rider, then I definitley would agree.

Have you met her???
Met as in shook her hand? Yes. Met as in had meaningful conversation with her? No. Which is why I could never say what does and doesn't Hillary tick.

As I said, I can't understand what motivates people I know well. There's no way I could tell people what motivates someone like Hillary who I don't know at all.
