Can someone here tell me how to remove tomato-based food stains from rubber/plastics? I have a white plastic stirring spoon, and a new white rubber spatula that both have tomato stains on them. I'm sure there must be a method to removing them so hopefully someone can tell me. Baking soda paste? Soaking in bleach? Help, please. :)

try rubbing them with olive oil. You can avoid future stains by spraying with pam or oil before putting them in the containers.

I've always heard that soaking in a strong bleach solution for a few hours is the way to go, but sometimes nothing will work especially if it was in contact a long time and microwaved in the container. My Aunt and Grandmother used to swear by it and it does work if the stain isn't too bad.

Since I have had so many bad experiences with this I tend to use throw away containers to store anything with a tomato base. I either collect containers from the Deli counter or the glad containers Hillshire Farms cold cuts come in (Yummy Pastrami)... just a thought.

Soak them in powdered dishwasher detergent and hot water.

Bleach can be tricky with rubberized plastics -- it can render them brittle sometimes.

There is actually a product sold at the grocery store for that very purpose. It's called Plastic Booster. It's made by Cascade.

Fill them with diluted bleach for about 10 minutes. Rinse, wash and you are done.

For all those about to say...eccch, bleach...that stuff is poison, you had better not try to figure out what makes chlorinated water, chlorinated. :rotfl:

I'll have to try the detergent trick for mine. I know I've been able to remove the stains from plastic containers by spraying it with cooking spray and letting it sit for a while then wiping clean.

Does this really work? I've never heard that before. About how long do you think they would need to sit?

Yes, it does work. How long depends on how sunny it is, the temperature, etc. Could be a day, could be a few hours. Google "bleaching tomato stains from plastic", and you'll see posts aobut it.
