Can someone tell me anything about Mara at AKL?

Is it a cafe or is it counter service? How is the food? I looked up the menu on Deb's site and see most of the standard fare so am curious.

It's counter service. Somewhat like Captain Cook's at Polynesian, Roaring Forks at Wilderness Lodge, and Tubbi's at the Dolphin. But perhaps somewhat better than any of those. No reason to eat there unless you're staying there, or visiting and want a quick meal.

We go there once in a while. Their pizza used to be fairly decent (for WDW), but not anymore. It never seems to be very crowded and the menu has some different items from most of the food courts - more chicken than burgers. It is somewhat quieter than most food courts.

counter svc...and when we stayed there it was always a joy to visit past 9am..no line no wait and hot fresh food...

If you are staying at the AKL, it's great to have it there. The staff are very nice and the place always seems welcoming and clean at any time of day. It is not somewhere you would visit just for itself. One of my personal favorite things about it is that they have Fresca in the soda machines.

Thank you all very much. Yes, we are staying at AKL for the first time, although we have eaten at Boma's before, and had never heard much about Mara.

Sounds like it might be good for a quick meal if we're tired or are in a bit of a hurry. Thanks!

We have stayed at AKL twice and eaten at Mara several times. On our next trip (in 60 days ), we will be stopping there for dinner on our way to EMH at AK one evening. The zebra domes alone are worth the trip ! On our trip will be me, DS (16) and DS's friend (also 16). I want to show his friend AKL, since I think it is such a unique resort. Enjoy!

I loved Mara. Where else can you go get chunky African soup in a bread bowl? It's delicious!
