I am taking my girls to WDW. I am not sure when because it depends on the costs. I know it is hard to say because everyone will spend a different amount of money but I have to save the money and I really need an acurate idea.

We will be 4 people - 2 adults, 2 kids between 3-10
flying to FL from NY
staying on property at ASM for 5 nights?
I would like to do the meal plan if still available
go to the 4 parks and maybe seaworld?
go to 2 character meals
plus spending money and extras

soooo disney experts any estimates for me?? ::MinnieMo

Thanks, this board is GREAT! :cheer2:

go to disneyworld.com and u can get a idea on the price with airfair and the dinning plan withthat u can get ur character meals and the rest of ur food then for spending we did $ 60 a day after meals ( we didn't have DDP) hope u have a great trip take lots of pics :happytv: :cool1:

when you start crunching numbers remember to take into consideration that for some things a child of 10 is priced the same as an adult (i thought when i looked at the dining plan it only allowed kids prices if they were under 9 or 10-which is a huge waste of money for our son, he prefers the kids meals and they are much less expensive to buy outright vs paying for an adult dining plan). i can't remember but i think once you hit 9 or 10 you can't get a child's park pass you have to get an adults. so don't budget based on 2 adults/2 kids it may end up being more like 3 adults/1 kid.

with the seaworld trip you will have to figure in either a one day rental car or some type of transportation.

the time of year you go will play a huge factor-you can get much better deals in the off seasons/non holidays (and you kind of have to play with the disney web site on this-because what you consider to be non peak might not mesh with their 'calendar'-(you think 'o.k. november will be crazy high prices thanksgiving week, but earlier in the month it will be cheaper.' in reality because of 'jersy week', 'soap opera' weekend and a few other factors (they get allot of austrailians there in nov/dec because it's their summer so they end up taking their big vacations) the rates jack up around vet's day (and it's insanely crowed). so if you have some ability to travel at different times of the year try all the dates-may save allot of $$$.

weekend rates are higher-so it can be a savings to go weekdays.

if you will only do one park per day don't get a park hopper ticket.

i know allot of people on these boards (myself included) book everything themselves and don't like package deals-but disney has had some realy good all inclusive packages lately that include your tickets, room, free transportation to and from the airport-and the wierd thing is sometimes while you pay a little more than you would by doing it all separate, if you need airfare you can end up saving by doing a package with the air included (we had this experience with a hawaii trip we're planning-i'm paying about $20 per day more for a room than if i were not doing a package BUT the package price including airfare is close to $1000.00 less than the best air prices i can find).

spending money? depends on your spending habits-figure prices for stuff are pretty much the same as non sale prices for the same stuff at the disney store. if you are big beverage consumers figure it's pretty hard to find anything in the parks to drink for less than $1.75 (and thats for a small cup/container or a standard size can of soda/1/2 liter bottle of water).

extras? if you're not taking your own there's stroller rental, if the 3 year old is still a crib sleeper you might have crib rental (not sure how asm works it-i know the dvc rooms have free portacribs), if you are renting a car and don't bring your own carseats there's a fee for that, if you need a mini fridge in the room-it's like $10 a day, if you need any otc meds you'll pay insane prices for them on-site (i pack a lunch box with every otc known to man and put it in the suitcase 'just in case'), if your medical insurance is like mine and does'nt cover out of home state unless it's 'life threatening emergency' it's best to buy travel insurance (both my kids ended up with ear infections after flying-i paid maybe $160 for a policy but it reimbursed me the $400 doctor's bill and the $80 in perscriptions-my pharmacy coverage does'nt work out of state either :sad2: ), if you pack your suitcases when you leave home close to the 50 pound max and you plan on adding souvineers to bring home, unless you bring an extra suitcase plan on paying the airlines $50 for going over the weight max, we don't do bad on 'tips' (the ones at meals we figure into our food costs) but there are still the porters for you luggage at the airport, the hotel staff that carries your bags to your room...and if you rent a car and use it onsite the parking at the parks is not free/included in your ticket price, and don't forget whatever it costs for long term parking at your airport (we've found that depending on the length of stay-it's sometimes cheaper for us to use either a door to door shuttle service or book one of those airport motel deals where you stay the night before you leave, they let you leave your car in their lot and shuttle you back and forth to the airports), only other 'extra' i can think of is if your kids go to one of the 'kids clubs'-i think they run around $8 or $10 per hour for each child.

just as a suggestion (this from another mom with 2 kids)-if you end up with a return flight thats allot later than checkout and you don't want to do another run to the parks, but dread the idea of keeping the kids occupied at the airport-check out the orlando airport hyatt hotel's day rate packages. you can arrive at the airport, check the luggage, get your boarding passes and then go to the hotel (it's right next to the security area) and relax in a room for a few or several hours. we've found this to be a great deal-it's so much better having a bed to stretch out on while the kids watch 'sponge bob' vs. having them bored, whiney, tired with only those hard plastic chairs at the gates.

Not sure how specific you want us to be but here goes...I did all our planning at disney.go.com you can get as many quotes as you want and the info come up right away you can save the trip info and create others...it will give you an estimate of how much a trip costs with or without dining with or without park hopper also you can add in airfare...you can plan your trip a year out and you can make payments as you go the main thing is you have to finish paying for your trip about 45 days before you go... Thanks to all our friends here I have been able to save alot on airfare and I was able to find out about a visa code that upgraded us to a moderate for $3 less than we were paying for All Stars...we are a family of four DS4 and DS9 we are doing 7 days 6 nights with park hopper and dining plan( upgraded to moderate for $3 less) @$2333 during the week of thanksgiving...because of dining we get 6 table services so I have ADRs for 4 character meals(some character meals are 2 table services but we arent doing those) and 2 restaurants...we did airfare seperate and again because of the disboards I have saved $300 in airfare we are flying from BWI for @800 round trip nonstop we are doing Magical express(free) and we only plan to stay at Disney no side trips...you can rent a car at disney not sure who you go through but others here can tell you...for us the meal plan works we like the convience of having it all paid for and not staying to a budget we like to eat so the amount of food is great...as far as park hopper again just the convience of knowing if one park is too crowded we can go to another...there are lots of great info here I wish you the best of luck and have fun :thumbsup2

Thank You for all of the helpful info. Does anyone know when Disney starts decorating for Christmas? I would like to go during value season but if I can go during the Christmas celebration I think my girls would love it. :santa:

I was originally going to suggest skipping SeaWorld just because, in my opinion, it would be more enjoyable to spend an additional day in one of the WDW parks that you and your kids enjoyed the most.

And then I considered COST, and since cost is an issue for you, you DEFINITELY want to skip SeaWorld (sorry, Shamu).

A one-day ticket for SeaWorld is $61.95 per adult, $49.95 per child (3-9). Since one of your kids is 10, that'll be 3 adults and 1 child, for a total admission price of $235.80. I have NO idea about the cost of round-trip transportation, let me just TOTALLY guess at $30.00.

Your one-day jaunt to SeaWorld will cost you $265.80.

If you do go to SeaWorld you'll likely buy 4-day passes to WDW. Wanna know how much extra a 5-day WDW pass will cost? Get ready ... sit down ... that extra day at a WDW park will cost an extra $4 per adult and 1 per child, a grand total of $13, in your case.

$265.80 versus $13.00. Is SeaWorld worth an extra $252.80 to you???

If you do decide to go to SeaWorld, then paying for the Disney Dining Plan might not be a good idea for you, since you'll likely have at least 2 meals (plus snacks) that you'll have to pay out-of-pocket for at SeaWorld, and unless you guys eat A LOT, you won't "make up" those extra meals on Disney property, if you know what I mean.

I used Dreamsunlimited to get a great deal.
Me and my friend, both 18, will be going for a week in November. We will be staying at Pop Century, we have a 4-day hopper pass. We also got the meal plan. The grand total was $1150. That was $577 each, so all and all it was extremely cheap, for 2 broke college students. :thumbsup2 On top of that we bought our plane tickets for $238, then found a better deal for $127 each. So i think we made out really good. I recommend dreamsultd. very much. good luck.

Christmas decoractions will be up by Thanksgiving! Crowds are a bit less right after Thanksgiving I have heard and that's when we are going since we can see everything decorated and have a bit less crowds. Getting closer to Christmas is crazy crowded and I have heard for Christmas you have to pick a park and get there early (like 10am) ad they close the park cuz there is just so many people!!

Hello fellow New Yorker!!! :sunny:

Welcome to the Dis!!! You've already gotten lots of good info here. I am absolutely NO expert, but we'll be leaving on our 6th trip in a couple of weeks.

My DS triples in volume in a confined space;) , so we have sometimes stayed offsite. You will be able to be in larger quarters for less than on property. If your heart is set on being on property, then the AllStars are a good bet - but bear in mind those rooms are about 220 sq. feet.

Of course - our preference, like many, is to be onsite in a mod or deluxe if we can swing it. Though the room rate is great offseason, the "discounts" end there in my opinion, unless you happen to get free dining - and there's much discussion about how "free" it really is.

We always fly SWA and I have changed ressies twice for this trip and we are down to flying 3 of us for $118 RT+ fees & taxes. When shopping for rental cars, I punch in every available code and check back. Have never paid more than $135/ for a week - IF you don't need a van...

First trip - MUST have character meals!! Pricey but so worth it to see your kids faces!!! Food isn't so bad, either...

Research here on the DIS, and read, read, read and ask questions. If there's a way to cut a corner, DIS'er's know it.:cool1:

I probably spend a minimum of 2K, bare bones, closer to 3K. Others' mileage varies widely.

Good luck and happy planning!! We look forward to seeing you here more often!!!:wizard:

If you belong to AAA, you can get a AAA rate if you plan ahead. Just be careful if you use a AAA agent cause a lot of them will know less than you about travel to DW.

Have you signed up for newsletter from Mousesavers? It's awesome. You can find out when discount codes are available and when they're going to come out. You can all look at allearsnet.com to look at resorts, menus, restaurants.

Some people do use TAs (travel agents) and some people prefer to plan themselves. I started with planning myself in order to figure out which resorts we would prefer to stay that. If you haven't watched the Disney planning video yet, I highly recommend that as a good starting point. My sons watched it 4 times that weekend. I spoke with a AAA TA who knew nothing and then I ended up contacting a TA through MagicForLess and she has been wonderful to deal with. When the discount code came out in August she emailed me at 9:30 that morning and told me she upgraded us and saved us $100 for the week compared to Value. We're staying at CSR Thanksgiving week.

We're starting off with base tickets and will upgrade to hoppers while we are there if we feel we need them.

I also had thought about Sea World as I've never been there and DS6 would really like to see Shamu. Once I priced the tickets there, I was amazed and said "no way" this trip. Way too expensive for one day compared to the additional Disney day.

As for DDP - it's a hard call when you have a 10 yr old cause you're paying adult prices. My DS10 will be DS11 tomorrow and we kept going back and forth and ended up choosing DDP once I realized all the character meals being buffets and needing to pay adult price for him anyway. That's why I'm already figuring that my next trip to DW will be before DS6 turns 10 so he can still be child priced. I'll take any savings I can get!

As for airfare, since you live in Buffalo, you'll probably be able to get a good rate through Southwest or AirTran.

Have fun researching and planning! I have learned so much here. Just be careful - CAUSE THIS PLACE IS ADDICTING!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl:

How far in advance did you buy your airfare from BWI? Just wondering in case we plan another trip the week of Thanksgiving. We've only been planning this one since August and I can't seem to find cheap airfare so we're driving unless a DING comes out?

ok I just ran numbers for 2 adults and 2 kids (age 3 & 10) for 5 nights at All-Star Movies.. not sure if you were talking about Movies or Music. I did this through Disneyworld.com and did it for the dinning Plan and tickets (no hoppers) and air (JFK-MCO).
This is what it gave me as your total and I would add about $60 per day for spending.
Your total with vacation insurance and all would be: $3352.45+ 199.80(tickets for SeaWorld) +$60 for a basic rental for 1 day (4door sedan and not including any child booster seat) +plus you need to figure out how much you'd think ou'd spend on food there! So you are looking close to 4k for the trip. But if you only get tickets for Dis for 4 days and a 1day ticket to Seaworld it would be a bit cheaper.

Good luck and that was for planning your trip from Nov26-Dec 1

We usually go for a week and figure 1000 per person for the trip as a guide line. We pay alot more for airline tickets then most people we live in Montana its not easy to get cheap flights with only 2 airlines. Our plane tickets takes up almost 1/2 the budget. This is our first year staying onsite though. We have stayed in the downtown disney area hotles on previous trips.

Hello fellow New Yorker! First, did you try checking the budget board? They may have some helpful tips as well as the previous posters. One thing we do is bring our own snacks and breakfasts. We also bring our own milk (Parmalat), juice boxes and several water bottles that we refill. Last year we factored this in and it ended up saving us about $300. We put all this in a separate suitcase of its own and then used the suitcase as a souvie bag for the trip home. Just make sure you don't make the bag too heavy. Now that you are unable to bring liquids on the plane, you might want to stuff some juices in your kid's bags. We also don't do the dining plan as we like to take a lot of little breaks and one big break to eat. We just don't like to go on rides stuffed or wait on lines in the heat with full stomachs. I highly recommend doing a character meal during lunch or dinner and not breakfast since you have to buy lunch or dinner anyway. They cost slightly more than the breakfast character meal, but $17.99 vs. $2.00 (because you brought your own breakfast) is a much better deal. Good luck!

I did the same thing but for 12/3-12/8. I got a total of $1884.15. We are able to fly from Philly for around $150/person so I would imagine yours would be around the same. That puts you at $2484 before Seaworld and without a discount which was actually offered this year (could have stayd at a moderate for this price). The dining plan would pay for the character meals and DME gets you to the hotel for free.

We actually booked our trip for next week through Dreams Unlimited (they are an official corporate sponsor of the Dis) and not only was the price good but we also have gotten great customer service. I highly recommend them. If you go to their site and fill out the form to get a quote that will give you something to compare the official WDW site quote with and there is absolutely no pressure to buy through DU. hth.

Haven't read the thread, but if you are looking for a great way to cut costs or how to figure out what to do with the money you have, check out mousesavers . It can be a HUGE help when counting pennies

Hiya, some food for thought. We live in northern jersey & b/c of my fear of flying- we've been taking the auto train, which is also cheaper than flying. We drive to the station in virginia (about 4 hours) and it cost us 640.00 for me, dh, and two ds AND the car---- so we also got our car with us.
We also go in january which is value season & stayed 8 nights at the pop for 54.00 a night.
We also opted out of going to seaworld b/c as another poster wrote it is several hundred dollars more... and instead went to the parks for 6 days.
We did NOT do the meal plan, though we did do one character meal.
Our total cost including 6 day park tickets, our transport from nj to fl and our 8 nights at pop came out to under 1800.

Wow - one poster said $1000 per person and we've never spent that much. If you are thinking of costs - definitely skip Seaworld. Use Disney transportation and Magical Express to and from the airport (free when staying onsite). And, again, if you're watching the budget - IMO - you can eat for less than the dining plan cost - especially since you have to pay for an adult for your 10 year old. That makes it what...about $126 or so for the 4 of you for the dining plan. Unless you want to do more than 2 character meals/expensive restaurants - I think you can do it for less if you eat breakfast in your room and bring drinks and snacks to the parks.

Jetblue usually has very good prices. Where would you be flying from in New York?

Just plan on spending about $300 more than you planned.
