Watching the ET special this evening and looks like a glorious ship. Where will the home port be? Itinerary, fares, what line is the ship? Will you have to have a pretty penny saved up to sail the QM2 or are the fares going to be doable? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Here's a factoid I heard on the Today Show.....the ship gets 40 feet per gallon. Yowsa.

Maybe I'm DCL obsessed, but does anyone else think that the QM2 looks similar to the Magic or Wonder? (Except minus one stack on the QM2)

They really seperate the people don't they? I noticed that if you book in the "Queen" categories you are always at the Queen restuarant. Same thing as you go down in categories.

I like the way Disney does it...the rotational dining.

I also noticed on the deck plans that there are kennels??? Can you really take your dog on board???:earseek:

dzneprincess: The QM2 will be primarily taking over for the QE2, by being the only ship to make regular transatlantic "commutes" between South Hampton England & New York. It will do other seasonal itineraries, but mostly the commute.

plutospup: You probably know this but....Actually, the Magic & Wonder were designed to resemble the classic ships of the 1930's & 1940's, including the original Queen Mary, which Walt Disney was very fond of. So, it's no coincidence that the QM2 looks the way it does.

CRB#33: Although I love that the QM2 is trying to preserve the old glory days of glamorous cruising, I think that their "caste" system of dining is prehistoric!!! It's very "Titanic"....I wonder if they lock the doors to the lower decks at night so that the "poor" people won't clutter the decks while the well-to-do strut around endlessly in their ball gowns and tuxes!!! LOL!!:teeth:
YES! There are kennels! You may take 2 pets per stateroom.

LOL Diva! That's exactly what I thought!

It's a beautiful ship and I would love to be in that top category, but I know I would only be able to afford "3rd class" (LOL). I really think I would be uncomfortable on a cruise on that ship. Heck I probably can't afford that level either! Those people are probably "rich" in my book! :p

I guess we can at least be glad they don't have posted rates for "steerage" class passengers.

;)

I'll have to see if I can dig up the article, but I read that the QM2 was trying to break away from the caste system that her predecessor used. On the QE2, the lower decks were truly built to isolate the passengers from the upper decks. Passageways deadended and it sounded like the pictures from the movie of the Titanic. It sounds like that's not going to be the case this time.

We are interested in the QM2, because my daughter is doing a semester abroad in England and we were thinking of flying over to visit her and taking the QM2 back from Southhampton.

this morning I found this at the polo site and I thought it was pretty interesting.

Just start with the QM2's custom-designed Rolls-Royce propulsion pods—the world's fastest engines not attached to a navy vessel—and take it from there: the only floating Canyon Ranch Spa, Veuve Clicquot's first shipboard Champagne bar, 10 restaurants supervised by Daniel Boulud (plus a Todd English eatery), theatre productions by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, lectures by Oxford dons, British nannies, a kennel for your hunting hounds, a planetarium and the world's most extensive seaborne wine cellar.

Now throw in the company of Mick and Elizabeth Jagger, David Bowie and Iman, Rod Stewart and other Cunard-addicts and you have a floating house party.

While the QM2's amenities are open to all 3,090 passengers, remember that a British ship also has an British class system, meaning, if you hope to rub dinner-jacketed elbows with Sean Connery over port and Stilton, you'd best book a stateroom on the highest (primo) decks. Only these guests are permitted entry into the famously fabulous Queens Grill and Queens Grill Lounge.

Just thought it was interesting to read it in black and white that you couldnt "hob knob" with the rich unless you are rich. Maybe Paige Davis should have gone on THAT cruise that Ann was on!

:hyper:

We have just watched the naming of the new QM2 on our local tv station, and have been impressed by the sheer size of the ship. Yes, it does look a little like the Magic/Wonder, but a fair bit bigger! Southampton (South coast of England) will be it's home. For those of you who can afford the fares, which range between £1000 (approx $1300) - £24,000 (approx $31,000), you may be interested to know that at least 3 crew members from the Magic will be setting sail on board next week. Guess Disney is the place to train the best crew members!!! However, I think I will stick with Mickey+co as my fellow passengers!:Bigger is not ALWAYS best! Pinkbounc Nat

typical snooty, stuffy English 'style' (yes, I'm aware Mickey Arison owns Cunard) cruise ship with snooty restricted class areas of ship where the common folk need not meander .....no thanks, but I'd opt for the Mariner of Seas any day.....

I find it interesting that they tell you they have kennels available for your pets but nowhere on the website could I find information regarding children. So I guess it is feel free to bring your animals but leave your children at home.

It's really great to see my work (Canyon Ranch) on the QM2. Our top VIP's are going to be on the ship when it goes out on their maden voyage. I cannot wait until they get back and we hear about all their experieces:teeth:.

I'd like to try it just once...for the whole "transatlantic" romantic feel...now if only DH could just win on a scratch ticket, huh?

Although I have to admit to some silly superstitious thoughts what with the ramp collapse before it even hit water, and the supposed Al-Quaeda threat against it.

SweetSpot, good point about the kids - are we sure the kennels are for the pets? *grin* ;)

LMAO... from that same website/article
can embark on a Voyage that's titanically chic.
The bold done by myself.... ironic that someone mentioned they are like the titanic on this very thread- and they mention titanically chic in that thread. Apparently it's not a mistake that they are similar to the titanic's way of seperating "classes".
