Southwest web site stated that it has youth fares for ages 2-11, exactly what is that and do other airlines do this as well?
Thanks, in advance for any help.

Most don't. Also, you have to call for the fare and make sure you know what the sale fares are. Lots of times its cheaper to buy the internet or ding fares.

Southwest, and some other airlines, offer child fares that are a discount (usually around 50%) off of the most expensive, unrestricted ticket price. You can almost always do better buying a regular "adult" fare for everyone online. About the only time a child fare is a bargain is if you're booking your tickets right before your trip (14 days or less) and all of the other fares are unavailable.

Dd, almost 12 now, has been flying since she was 4. We have never gotten her a 'childs fare'. They were always more money that what we paid for the internet tickets...so, we just treat her as an adult, fare wise.

Delta offers half price tickets for people wanting to buy a seat for their kids 2 and under.

I have never seen a SW child's ticket cheaper than sale prices. I believe only exception would be heavily booked flights during holidays that are at high end of SW price scale (full refundable, etc), childs tix may be bit cheaper in that case.

Another thing to remember is you cannot do on-line check in with child tix ever.
