Ok so Im trying to figure out this RCI thing and how to capitalize on it. Can someone point me send me a thread to study and or a website, anything to make me understand. Is there somewhere I can check to see what open? Etc Etc,.... Thanks in advance

The DVC member website has a link to the RCI resorts that we can trade into. The ones that say RCI Points can be traded for less than one week. This is a good place to start putting together a wish list.

Check out reviews on trip advisor or on the TUG (timeshare users group) website (I believe it costs $10 to join which gives you access to reviews).

The member website lists the points required for a trade and the RCI link will tell you what the seasons are for each resort and what the checking dates are for each resort so that you begin to think about when you would most like to travel and how many points you need for an exchange.

Then call member services.

We cannot investigate availability on RCI through The DVC website. Someone who is a member of RCI could check availability for you but make sure that they check only those resorts listed on the DVC link.

There are different options for actually making the trade ranging from trying to match the day you call to wait listing for resorts to depositing a week. To be honest I found it a lot more helpful to talk through the process with member services than to try to read up on it from the materials BUT that is really only effective if you've done the homework on the resorts and have a wish list of resorts and dates put together.

Member services is great at explaining your options and how they work but I would not expect them to give you odds on whether you will get a particular trade or what resorts are easier or harder to get or what resorts are better than others. They expect you to choose your requests. Reading past posts here will give you some idea of what to expect (with an emphasis on planning long in advance and being flexible with dates and places) and there is some element of luck.

Hopefully that's a start.

I also recommend TUG - I believe it's $15 for the first year and $10 after that. Just be careful when reading reviews - some of them are old. I wish they were more current but I guess it's the members who are not posting updated reviews when they visit.

Related questions (maybe)

I just banked all of this year's points and now due to a potential job change I might be able to take a quick vacation in Nov. IF i could get an RCI on points could I borrow to do this? (March use year if that matters?) I know I can't borrow the banked points, but there are enough points with the new year if I can borrow them)

You should be able to use March 2011 points for an exchange with dates anywhere from now until 2 years from March, subject to availability. It sounds like you're thinking less than a full week though, which limits you to 10 months out and limits choice of resorts as well as availability. What/where were you thinking of?

I would also recommend TUG for timeshare info and the member's website for some limited information. One can also go to www.rci.com and find a lot of info. I can forward you the specific info that Disney produces related to exchanges if you want, just email me directly.

I don't have any March 2011 points. I will have March 2012 points.

Actually it would probably be one of the "day by day" resorts and while I have a list of them have not done any research. Someplace warm! :) I think lI will not worry about this until after the interview this week. If I like them and they like me then I can decide if I want to sneak in a quick getaway before I start.

Good luck with the interview. Some of the issues with less than 7 nights is that not only are there less resorts POTENTIALLY available, not all of them routinely allow shorter stays. Even when they do, essentially all charge an EXTRA housekeeping fee often in the range of $50-75 but it can vary a lot. You might also consider BVTC options and private exchanges.

I did look over the info for FL other than Orlando for Silver and Gold Crown options and didn't see much availability of interest. Palm Beach Shores was likely the best option that I saw and there were a couple of Panhandle options available though I think only one is on the DVC list.

Actually I was thinking farther south :) THanks for looking however!

I did some playing around this morning and there are some cheap "last minute" specials paying cash so that may be a much better idea with the flexiblity I would need.

And of course there is always my favorite get away.. Paris. (I actually put a frequent flyer ticket on hold for that :) )

Looked for Souther Atlantic, less than 7 nights and Silver/Gold Crown and came up with a few options in Weston and Pompano beach mostly. I did not cross reference the DVC list. Remember that starting the week of Xmas, this is high Season (the Highest) for South FL (MX and Caribbean also) though less so for Jan than the rest of the time.

Thanks again. This would probably be early December which tends to be less crowded at a lot of resorts.
That should be easier. Realize that there aren't a lot of top resorts in South FL, esp with RCI. You might look at Marco Island, Naples, Sanibel/Captiva and Ft. Myers as well. Not a lot of options that fit your situation but much better options if you can find something. Contact me directly when you know and I'll be happy to see what it looks like for the exact time you want.
