Can someone please explain the thinking behind booking throw away FPs

Hi all. I was trying to explain the concept of throw away FPs to my DH when I realized, I don't know the rationale behind it; why not just book FPs for when you'll be at the park?

Thanks!

I don't know what "dummy FPs" are.

I'll guess that you might be referring to what might be better called, "TEST-BOOKING" FPs.

The reason would be that if it is before the actual date that a guest can book 'REAL" FPs,
the guest can try out booking "test" (dummy?) FPs and then cancel them.

The system won't let guests book "real" FPs before a certain number of days before their
actual trip dates.

I was reading another thread here and someone mentioned booking FPs they knew they wouldn't use. Dummy may not have been the term they used. Basically why book a FP you have no intention of using?

I have been practicing making FPs for this Wed and my wrist hurts. LOL.

And what do you mean by tapped off? Say I make a tier one I know I won't use, once it expires, I can make another (if available) even if I am not in the park or been in a park that day?

Because you have to book your three Fast Passes for the same park and you have to use all before being able to get a new one. So someplace like Epcot you may want to book a early time fast past on a second tier attraction and then let it expire, use your Tier 1 and another tier 2 then you can make a new Fast pass for a different park if you want or try for a different Tier 1 FP.

By tap off, I mean people walk up to the tapstile, touch their MBs and don't go on the ride. But people would not do that for a Tier 1 since those are the rides most people want. People make Tier 2s they don't care about. You can either let them expire, like you said, or tap them off so that the two Tier 2s can be used quickly so they can get another Tier 1 earlier in the morning when there are more available. People who don't go at RD sometimes book then when they know they won't be there and let them expire.

We typical have enough Tier 2s that we want to go on anyway so we don't do that, but it's a strategy people use.

I think Epcot is where this would be most used, because in general you don't need a FP for the Tier 2 attractions (at least during the first three hours of the day).

So you want to "use" your Tier 2 FPs just as quickly as possible, so you are eligible as early as possible for a 4th FP. (With Soarin, Test Track, and Frozen all being Tier 1, the only way to do all three without much of a wait is to get a 4th FP for one of them.)

It may become more common at DHS after TSL with all those rides bring Tier 1.

Thank you! I didn't know you had to use all 3 before you can book a 4th! This makes sense now. I thought you could always have 3. Now I get it (I think).

This is our first time using Magicbands and FP+. :thanks: for expelling. It helps a lot.

Thank you! I am so glad I asked.

Here’s the definitive post for your husband as described in the FP FAQ ADDENDUM STICKY:

Thanks for showing me where in the sticky. I find all that information, while very helpful, sometimes overwhelming. Old brain and all. Great info!

Watch the FP entrance for LWTL long enough and you’ll typically see a few folks “tap out.” This always makes me sad - we love that ride!

My kids complained up and down about having to go on it this year (good thing they don't know about tapping out or changing FPs). Then halfway through DD7 changed her mind and decided she really found it interesting. Guess we get to go back next trip. :rolleyes1

For a family that only gets to go every 2-3 years, we treasure all of the attractions and would never dream of not using a FP.

That’s understandable. We haven’t been to WDW in 6 years but we are local to Disneyland/DCA. Our must-do list includes some, but not all, of the attractions that they both have.

But, there are many attractions that can be experienced (often multiple times) without using a FP.
Not using a FP does not necessarily mean not riding an attraction.
It just means not riding that attraction with the FP at that time.
