At one point of the ride, the car stops in a room and it appears that tons of those beatles from the Mummy movie fill the room covering the walls and the floor. Its very short though but it does look pretty real.
Not to ruin the ride, but the bugs are just on a screen, they are images. They are not "fake" bugs, just a screen that projects bugs coming at you. Not the least bit scary.

I am disappointed that this particular effect looks quite fake. You should not be worried. The air puffs on Shrek on the other hand--they really seem to freak some people out! We could not get my Shrek lovin' nephew back on Shrek for fear of the spiders.
The scarabs that you see on the screen in front of you are a projection. The scarabs that drop out of the skeletons on the side walls and from below the screen are "Real" (plastic). The walls on the side that show scarabs are both "Real" (special plastic scarabs on a rotating wall) and projected.
Sometimes a live one makes its way into a railcar and starts to bite. Those are the ones that haven't been Trained yet.
Funny but true: sometimes the scarabs that fall out of the skeletons land in railcars. They are later flung from the ride during the coaster section. During the year I worked there, I must've found at least 2-3 scarabs per month that got "free".
