My family of 4 will be flying into John Wayne airport, and heading to Paradise Pier. This time I would like to avoid a shared shuttle. Should we go with a reserved town car-type ride, or try an Uber driver? I've never done Uber before, and am not even sure how it works. What would the price difference between these options be? Would we pay the driver directly? Thanks for the advice..... always good to try new things!

You'd probably want an UberXL since you have 4 people and luggage, the fare estimate is $36-$47. To use Uber you need to download the app to your phone and create an account. When you do that it will ask for you to store a payment method and that is what gets charged any time you need a ride. There is no cash exchanged with the driver unless you want to tip them in cash, some do, some don't.

Lyft is another service that operates the same way, some prefer one or the other, most drivers work for both although I've heard Lyft has better customer service if you need to contact them for some reason. Lyft+ fits up to 6 people and the estimate is $31 - $43. You can add a tip to the Lyft driver within the app so no cash is needed.

I checked a couple of Town Car services and they seemed to be $60 - $80 range. Check Yelp, there are some highly rated ones.

We used to do the shared shuttle but the last half a dozen trips we have just grabbed a cab. More often than not we get one of the van type cabs which would fit your family. The fare is typically in the $40 range.

Just take a regular taxi van. It is the same price as the car taxis, but with enough space for all your stuff. No need to order one ahead of time, just grab your bags and head out to the taxi stand. Should be around $40ish.

We just took a taxi van from SNA to the Tropicana. It was $49.50, including a five dollar tip.

Taxis are the easiest....they are lined up right outside the doors and the vans are the same price as the cars. Right there when you are ready and off you go.

Uber has been our best option. Always have had clean vehicles.

Our plan at SNA was to take uber, but then they wanted us to walk way down to where they could pick up. That irritated me.

Of course, instead of just getting a cab we went across and got a no-name shuttle, who then put our lives in huge peril, so THAT was a mistake. (90 mph on the flyovers, late at night, while yawning and telling us how tired he was...great experience LOL)

Uber now picks up right at bagage claim at SNA
