I've just started experimenting with shutter speeds and I was wondering on my camera the speeds go from 1/1600 of a second to 15 seconds. What I'm not sure of is the range of speeds that are between 1/4 and 1". After 1/4 the range goes "3, "4, "5, "6, "8 and then 1". I'm assuming that 1/4 is a quarter of a second and 1" is one second, but I can't figure out what the numbers between them are.

1/4 and 1" are "full stops" There is also 1/2 that is a full stop in between those 2.

Bold is the full stop. In between are 1/3 stops.

Speeds faster than 1 second are fractions of a second. A quotation mark indicates a decimal point. At shutter speeds of 1/4 second and higher, only the denominator is shown.
