Hello! A while back on the podcast, they mentioned that the US was planning on introducing some $1 coins at WDW. Does anyone know anything more about this? My (almost) 14-year old son is OBSESSED with coin collecting (and Disney) and this would be a fabulous belated birthday present for him. We're 14 days away from our 3rd trip to WDW and I would love to pick one of these coins up for him!!

I know my family got some in October in our change. I don't know if they're still doing it or not. I believe they're (or they were) only doing it in Liberty Square in MK and The American Pavilion in Epcot. Just ask there when you go! :goodvibes

My DD received a $1.00 coin in her change from the cart outside HM in Nov.

It was pretty funny because the CM thought handing the coin to her was a big deal. He actually seemed rather dissappointed in her reaction to it, or lack of reaction I suppose. I just shrugged and told him we are Canadian, we have nothing but coin up here!;)

I know this wouldn't be Disney, but if you just want a dollar coin you could get one at a bank on your trip to the U.S. Also post offices usually have them. I always seem to get them in change from the stamp machines.

Thanks for your help. I guess I'll just ask around when we're down there!!!

Yes, in January I got four (!) of these $1 coins with my change after buying a Mickey Bar in Liberty Square. They were nice and shiny and new... and I gave them all back 15 minutes later when I bought my dole whip!

It may have been on the Theme Park board, but someone posted that they got the new $1 coin in change in one place, and then went to use it at one of the shops (MK I think) and was told they don't take foreign currency... :)

The OP is talking about new coins that were only released in WDW.

I don't believe that there is any U.S. currency that is "unique" to WDW. Disney participated in a pilot program to begin distributing the coins as change at several locations. That pilot program ended, although they may be continuing to give them out. I believe these were the first of 4 new redesigned Sacagawea dollar coins, with a new one coming out soon if not already.

Disney was likely the single largest source of the 2009 design though.

If you are looking for the coin in general, it may be referred to as the "2009 Sacagawea" or "2009 Native American series" dollar coin.
