I am renting points from someone (she's out of town so I can't contact her right now, but I was hoping to get an answer today) but we are most likely going to have to cancel (leaving on Wednesday, DH can't walk...long story). We've been going back and forth for a week or so (myself and DVC owner) and I'm not quite clear on the way this works.
If we cancel, it goes into a holding account, right? What is the policy on reusing the points? Is changing the dates the same thing as cancelling? She tried to reschedule for me for a few weeks from now, but nothing was available in any DVC property the dates I wanted (only focused on one set of dates last week, I was still counting on going on Wed, but it was a just in case scenario).
I know there is something about using within 60 days, or after 60 days? I'm just trying to figure out if I'm going to be able to re-book anything. I have rented points from this person for several years, and she is such a sweetheart, I just don't want to inconvenience her, and I feel bad for having issues with our trip. :(

I understand that they go into a holding account that must be used within 60 days. So if there are other dates you can go and stay at any resort with SSR and OKW being the most likely resorts for availability you have a chance. Otherwise - I believe she looses the points.

Let's see. If you cancel a DVC reservation within 30 days of the start of the trip, the points go into a holding account. These points can only be booked within 60 days of the start of the proposed trip. They will expire, i.e. the owner will loose them, when the owner's use year ends.

For example, I have a August UY. So if I cancelled a reservation within 30 days, then those points would go into a holding account. If I haven't used them by July 31, then I loose the points. Also, the trip itself has to be taken by July 31st in my example.

Here are the parameters for holding points.

1. They expire at the end of the use year. You would have to know what the owner's use year month is to know the actual date. For example, if it is February, the points expire on the following January 31; if it is August, the points expire on the following July 31, etc.

2. Holding points can be used to make a reservation that will begin no more than 60 days from the date you call to make the reservation. Since availability is often quite limited once you get to the 60 day mark, it can be difficult to actually use holding points.

Sorry you have to cancel - hope you are able to find a new time to go.

so, in other words, I would have to book (but not stay) between Oct 22 and Dec 21, but the stay would have to be by the end of her UY?
what if it is just rescheduled, rather than cancelled, and it did not go into a holding acct?

Holding Points may only be used for a reservation made within 60 days of arrival. They will expire at the end of the current Use Year. if the member calls tomorrow, they could only reserve dates thru December 20. If they call on November 15, they could only reserve dates thru January 15, 2009. How far ahead this is possible depends on when the current Use Year ends.

This is assuming your agreement with the member allows for this. It sounds as though this member is being quite generous by trying to reschedule your dates. Much will depend on when the points will expire. If the member has a December Use Year the points must be used by November 30, 2008. If they have a February Use Year, they expire on January 31, 2009.

Sorry you have to cancel your trip. Good luck with rescheduling the reservation.

I believe she has a February Use Year. So based on that, and if we cancelled tomorrow, when could the points be used? I'm sorry I'm so dense! I'm just not getting the 2 stipulations and how they work together/against each other.

OK, assuming she has a Feb UY, then the trip must occur prior to 1/31/09.

Now, let's say that you want a trip that starts on 1/5. Then she couldn't try to book it for you until 11/5. (i.e. 60 days before)

If the owner's use year is Feburary, the points would need to be used by January 31, 2009. With DVC there is no such thing as "rescheduling;" your reservation for next week would be cancelled and the points would go into holding. Then between now and January 31st they would need to be used or the owner loses them.

The thing you do not seem to be getting is that they may only be used to make a reservation 60 days in advance of arrival. An example may help: let's say you decide to go January 10, 2009. The reservation could not be made until November 10, 2008, which is 60 days in advance of arrival. If you are trying to go in the next 2-3 weeks instead of next week, the holding account is not really an issue since you would be within the 60 day booking requirement.

The bigger problem will be availability. Resorts have been booked for this very busy holiday season for months, so trying to reschedule now will be difficult at best and very likely impossible. And if you do find a villa, it may be a different size, class, resort, and/or in a different season and therefore the points needed may not be equal to the reservation you cancelled. If you do not reuse all the ones you used for the initial reservation she may be stuck with them. And if you need more, she may or may not have them available for you.

Finally, as to the terms of cancellation, that is between you and the owner. There is no specific contract or agreement that all owners use, so we cannot answer what the owner will or will not agree to. We can tell you DVC policies, but not the terms you and the owner agreed to.

okay, now I completely understand, thank you for the clarification
and I do understand it is up to the owner, I will be talking to her tomorrow to figure it all out

thanks again

I'm sorry you may end up cancelling.

I rent some of our points on ocassion and a similar thing happened to one of my renters who had to cancel their reservation. I had no problems with trying to reschedule for them but the dates they wanted were not available. So rather than letting their points expire I was able to reallocate their "holding points" to another existing reservation thereby essentially saving their points for use the following year. Your comments concerning the owner you're working seem to support they have a desire to work with you. Depending on their use year and whether they have other reservations pending they may be able to do the same for you. Bottom line is trying to safeguard the points for your future use...even if you don't get to use them until 2009 or possibly 2010. Good luck.

As long as there is not a waitlist for your existing reservation, you can do this. But if there is a waitlist, your existing reservation gets cancelled and you get put to the bottom of the list. So it won't work every time.

If the reservation is cancelled on SAME DAY you are supposed to check-in

the points are lost. You mention Wednesday, don't know if you mean

Wednesday Oct 22 ... if so, this reservation needs to be cancelled no later

than Tuesday, Oct 21 in order for those points to go into Holding.

In order for points not to be lost a reservation must be cancelled no

later than day before check-in date.
