Can someone explain the points change per year?

I am all ready to sign my contracts and fed-ex them but I have a question. I e-mailed my DVC rep but have not heard back yet. I thought maybe someone from the forum may be able to explain it to me.

One of the selling points for the DVC is that every year the number of points for a hotel stays the same.

But when looking at Animal Kingdom 2010 compared to 2011 I see some values go down a few points while some values have gone up a few points.

Can you explain the fluxuation?

For example:

2011:
Adventure Season has "STUDIO STANDARD" as 69 a week and the "TWO BEDROOM STANDARD" is 220 a week.

2010:
Adventure Season has "STUDIO STANDARD" as 73 a week and the "TWO BEDROOM STANDARD" is 215.

My questions are:

(1) Why the decrease for studio standard if point value is supposedly to stay the same?

(2) Why the Increase in 2 bedroom Standard if point value is supposedly to stay the same?

Obviously I shouldn't care about the decrease, but if the higher level rooms go up in value every 2-3 years then our points go down in value....this is our concern that in 30 years we will not be able to stay the same number of vacation days as we can currently.

Thank you for all the information and explanation.

Every point represents a small fraction of the total available real estate at the property. So, the total amount of points do not change. DVC from time to time, can and will make changes to how those points are spread out throughout the year based on demand trends. It is in everyone's best interest to balance the points charts to demand as close as possible so that the resort stays nearly full all year long.

In reality, there have not been many significant changes. The biggest have been during the last couple years as DVC has increased weekday and reduced weekend points to help balance the lopsided demand that was occurring.

THe "normal" annual changes are because the dates of Easter and Spring Break weeks change year to year.

Point reallocations to balance occupancy and demand have happened 3 times in DVC history. In 1996, 2010 and 2011.

Though Disney is not allowed to change the total points applicable to a resort it can make changes to the points needed for any one or more days and rooms during the year as long as any increase is met by an equal decrease for other times and rooms. It can do that when it appears that demand for one time is getting too high in relation to another time. The point changes you see from 2010 to 2011 were actually part of a point shifting that Disney conducted over a 2 year period that mainly lowered weekend points and raised weekday. With the 2011 point chart Disney was done with the weekend to weekday shift. You will see that the 2012 chart actually matches the 2011 chart (except that Easter and Thanksgiving fall on different dates). The only other point shifting that occurred was in the early 1990s for OKW when some seasons were lowered and others raised.

Put it to you this way, Disney can change everything except your home resort priorty booking advantage. Everything else can, has, or will change.

Actually the current home resort priority can change. The contract only guarantees one month priority. So they could change it from 11/7 to 11/10.

It is in the contract that the points for the entire DVC resort for the entire year has to balance. They can't just raise them all.

Bought enough points in '93 to stay in a studio 27 days per year.
Since the three changes to the points charts, I now have enough points to stay only 22 days per year.

Same issue with us. We are now short 35 points per year with the new point charts but Disney is really nice to us because after they changed the charts, they decided to let us transfer points from them at $15 per point. :thumbsup2

They started to even out the number of points required for a weekend with the weekday points. But where points go up, somewhere else points must go down. DVC saw lots of weekend nights not being use because of the higher point requirement, so they reduced the points for the weekend a bit and raised them for the week.

That's how the PPs wound up not having enough points. Probably they were Sun to Fri visitors and not an entire week. Or the time of the year they always go went up and somewhere else went down. I wouldn't be surprised if they started to raise points for early Dec and lowered them for another time of year.

The changes specifically to the OP's question were due to AKV changing multiple villas from Savannah view to Standard view. Therefore standard went down in points, but savannah went up in points. The (I think it is the) pembe savannah is not nearly as nice as some of the other savannahs and many people complained causing Disney to change those rooms classifications to Standard. This is also why there are standard GV's now in AKV.
