Can someone explain the "PIN" to me??

I have been reading through the board about PINS and discounts and have no clue what it is all about! I am fairly new to this board and was curious how it can save me $$$$! DS and I leave in 22 days for our trip but I am already starting to think about our next trip in Jan. 2013 with DD who will be almost 4 at that time. Can I get some info on how this PIN works and how to get them!

Thanks in advance! I am all about ways to save money! DH is already dreading that trip, he says it will cost a fortune. I try to tell him not to worry, I find deals all the time! I think the total for DS and my trip only came to $1100 and that included airfare. We did the Magic Your Way PH with dining and are staying 4 nights. Plus I used $600 in rewards, so I felt I did pretty darn good! If I can do even better next time I would love to!

OOPS! I was off a little on the total... it was $1400 including air. Still seems pretty good to me!

A PIN is normally some kind of discount code. You can get them via snail mail or e-mail. Recently, it's been speculated that if you make an itinerary on the waltdisneyworld.com website and then in the section that asks if you have resort reservations, say that you don't have reservations yet, you might get a PIN code via e-mail. I did this several days ago and within a couple of days I had a PIN in my in my e-mail for the 20/30/40 discount. I'm all about saving money wherever I can!

sorry for such an elementary sounding lesson :

code-set of letters that identifies the package, room rate, etc and it's price that you are purchasing (kind of like the upc on an item at the store)

discount code - a special offer code anyone has access to that discounts from the regular rack rate the package or whatever that you are purchasing (like a coupon code)

Pin code - a special offer code that is only available to the addressee. It comes via email or mail (although sometimes you have one of these and never know unless you ask). There is a special pin# with the code to give you access to the code. (like the pin number for your atm card).

Special offers have limited dates and availability, and can be for many different things (both discount and pin). There are lots of beliefs about how to get pin codes. Basically get on every Disney related mailing list available, do the iteneraries etc like has been posted about (i don't remember the specifics, anything else you see listed on the boards that might be a possibility, then sit back and wait for the seemingly random appearance of one. I've followed all the suggestions I have read at one time or another, but have never received a pin.
