Can someone explain the "I'm scared of Clowns" thing?

John Wayne Gacy - nuff said!

:clown: = :scared1:

along with the previous reference to IT and the fact that it looks like they are constantly smiling even if they're frowning...CREEPY

BTW-I wouldn't say I'm afraid of clowns to conform to pop culture...that's just silly

actually, I haven't seen a clown in several years. The only thing that would creep me out is if I saw a clown in any circumstance outside of a circus or rodeo or something

I am not so much scared of clowns as I am disgusted by them...

When I was ten years old I was sitting in the second row at a little two ring cirucs...the clowns came out and started to do their thing...all was right in the world...

The clowns came out and ran around doing funny things to each other (shame, not THOSE kind of funny things...) and all was still right in this world and I was laughing until this big clown did a little dance across the front row of the audience. He did a few big spins (acting dizzy) and then...everything was wrong with the world...

The clown exploded.... Well, not really but he hurled in my lap...yep... that was me, the girl covered in clown lunch...trying not to up chuck myself because the dizzy clown puked on me!!

To this day clowns are NOT my favorite people!

**Good things do happen to those who are vomited on!! I got a free circus t-shirt and got to ride on an elephant!** :clown:

OK. I have a confession. I am also TERRIFIED of clowns and anything in costumes, too. I refuse to go outside on Halloween even!! I really want to get over this before I have kids, because I would love for them to get pictures with the characters...

I think it started with clowns, and it progressed to anything dressed up. When I was little and my parents took me anywhere with characters or clowns, I would instantly RUN AWAY. They were afraid people would think they were kidnapping me!! I remember once, I was sitting in the cart (in the front seat of the cart) at Publix. I was looking down at something, and I looked up and Santa Clause was in my face and I screamed SO LOUD the whole store froze. My grandmother was in the next aisle and she said she knew it was me and started freaking out! My grandpa was the one who was with me, but his back was turned and he didn't see 'Santa' coming up. He said Santa dropped the candy cane and ran away!!

Also-I remember once we were at the restaurant Red Robin, and the red robin himself came out and was going around to different tables. I got UNDER the table and wouldn't leave, my parents had to feed me my chicken fingers that way. I was just terrified. Ofcourse I wouldn't do that now (maybe??) but I start to hyperventilate and freak out.

Does anybody have any suggestions when it comes to the characters? I really want to get over this and have fun like everybody else!! I DON'T think my fear of clowns will EVER go away though!!

Sorry to hyjack the thread, but I was actually just thinking TODAY that I should post about this and ask for suggestions!!

Clowns, those awful dummies, make my flesh crawl!
It's funny, but DSis feels the same way & she hates organ grinders' monkeys, too. I can truthfully say, I don't care for 'em either! :teeth:
DSis & I think we must've been terrorized in a circus when we were wee ones! :rotfl:
It's not only the repulsion--rather than fear-- for me, but a suffocating boredom, almost like a claustrophobia--
Yuck! don't like even thinking about it~ Yup, when I saw those John Wayne Gacy clown photos it truly confirmed the years clown avoidence!

I don't mind the French Poirot or Poirette clowns or the stylized Russian clowns

Killer Klowns from Outer Space is what did my DH in. Hates :clown:

Do you think they are more afraid of us than we are of them?

Not really afraid of clowns, but in my opinion anything that presents itself as being that happy all of the time probably has some serious hidden issues. :rolleyes1 :stir:
