Hi everyone

I've been reading about DVC and renting points and there is A LOT I don't understand

first of all, can Canadians rent points or only US citizens?

is renting points slightly cheaper than book through Disney or extremely less expensive?

for example, if you wanted to rent a week at AKV at typical renter rate what would that cost?

we are not a family that could EVER afford to stay at a Deluxe resort at Disney prices...even the moderate resorts are extremely expensive... is renting points a way that you can experience the nicer resorts without a hefty price tag?

just some things I'm curious about. Thanks in advance for any answers. stay safe 💕

There’s at least 1 DVC rental companies in Canada, so I don’t think that’s a problem ;)

Cost is highly variable. DVC seasons and cash room seasons are not always the same, so some times of the year DVC might cheaper vs Disney than others. You have to look at point charts to see when rooms use less DVC points.

DVC villas are in different buildings/ wings of a resort and have different amenities than cash rooms. (Ie studios usually have a Queen bed and pull out couch instead of 2 real beds)

Usually the cheapest DVC rooms need to be booked 11 months in advance.

When “renting points” you are just reserving a reservation that a DVC owner makes with their timeshare points. The owner controls that reservation.

I think most rental prices are between moderate and deluxe rates. Occasionally there are cheaper “distressed” rentals where a owner made a reservation they suddenly can’t use, so they look to get a little $ instead of the points going to waste. Those can be less than moderate prices.

I think if you go with a rental company it is about $18/point. It is much cheaper to rent directly from an individual, probably $14/$15 per point. You can go to the rent/trade boards to do that. There are also other sites to connect with owners. If you rent a dvc 1 bedroom at AKV in September it will be around 160 points or $2900 through a rental company, or around $2300 direct from an owner. If you rent a studio at AKV that same week it will be around 80 points and $1500 through a rental company and $1200 direct from owner. These are really rough numbers but just to give you a ballpark. Also, depending on the time of year, the point costs vary. September is an inexpensive month.
