Can someone explain how data ports work in the hotels?

If I have a lap top, how do the data ports work? and how do I log on to the internet? Do I have to bring a phone number of my internet provider from home or am I using the hotel's provider? Sorry for the dumb questions, just never done it before. Costs?

You have to use your own provider, so bring a phone # from home. We usually join AOL for a free trial period right before we leave from home.

There is a data port in the side of the phone where you can plug in your phone cord that connects to your laptop modem.
