We are possibly looking at visiting a couple of times next year so i thought about gaetting the franciallian(sp) annual pass. But when i've gone before i've booked direct through disney and stayed on site which includes entrance to the parks. So what is the benefit? Can you stay in disney hotels and just pay stay prices not including parks or do you have to stay elsewhere to use ap? Sorry for being so vague....

Unless you are planning on not going in the parks on the 2nd and 3rd days of your visit the Francilien pass is not your best option as it cannot be used on days 2 & 3 after purchase. Where you stay is obviously up to you - once you have an annual pass you can book room only at the Disney hotels but you need the pass first to make the booking.

If you have an AP you can get room only prices for onsite hotels. Or stay off site & not have to worry about getting park tickets. I think the francillien AP has the 2nd/3rd days blacked out so you would have to pay to get into the parks for 2 days.

You can book room (and breakfast ) only in the Disney hotels but usually it is only possible to do this once you have your AP as you have to give its number when you book. So most people stay off site when they buy the pass and then onsite for future visits.
With the dream and I think Fantasy passes you can also get discount off the room as well as being reduced anyhow as not including tickets but Im not sure if this is the case for Francilien passes or not. there are also good discounts with dream and fantasy but again Im not certain about the Francilien - if you look at the DLP magic site there is a page there which lists all the benefits of each pass.
2 things to watch out for with Francilien is that it cant be used 2nd and 3rd days after first use so not ideal for most people and also there are blackout days when it cant be used so again you would need to check these against possible days you may visit
