They share the same address. If you add an extra driver, do you go to the counter?

No, you don't go to the counter, it is automatic.
Automatic Authorized Drivers

Free (in the United States and Canada) – An Emerald Club members spouse, immediate family member, business partner, employer, or fellow associate who has an assigned corporate contract with National and drives the car for business purposes.
Immediate family is a Mother/Father, Son/Daughter, or Brother/Sister who has the same address on the drivers license as the Emerald Club member's. This includes a spouse regardless of whether he/she has the same last name, is a common law spouse or same gender domestic partner.
Free (in the United States and Canada) – On commercial rentals, the renter's business partner, employer or fellow associate, who has an assigned corporate contract with National and drives the car for business purposes.
All other additional authorized driver situations are subject to a daily charge.
EC.

Well, while Gail's response is comprehensive my experience has been that the response from National is no.

They seem to want a "legal" realtionship. The fact that my boyfriend and I have been together for over a decade and had a shared address was not a "legal" relationship in thier world. (We have no "legal' documentation!) Since I had been told this we only allowed me to drive. As I read Gail's info it seems like "maybe" we had a leg to stand on, but.... the hassle factor might not have been worth it.

In my case it is not really valid anymove, we live in different cities so we don't share the same address.

Dee and I are not married and have never had a problem with National. They have always said, "No problem". I do wish, Carol, that they would honor what they print and educate their employees on the policies. It sure would make our "jobs" easier, right? :)

I know a few couples who are "legally" married and do not share the same last name. How does a couple prove that they are married? How many people carry thier marriage certificates around with them? I'm going with my boyfriend and we also share the same address. I'll definitely try to get him as the extra driver.

I just returned from a long weekend with friends. One of my friends made the reservation in her name. She called National and was told to go to the counter to add an additional driver (me). After we stood in line for at least 20 minutes, the National person said just to go over to the garage, they can do it there. We said we already stood in line, we wanted her to process the paperwork (I had to give them my license). It was $7 per day, I think that's kind of high. I was hoping to get a break because I am also a Emerald Club member, they said no.

This is just the tread I was looking for. I just joined Emerald Club so let me get this straight... I can go right to the garage (by-pass the counter) and get the car, and also add my husband (same last name) on to the rental agreement for no addl. charge? or is he automatically cover without even showing his license?

You don't even need to add him at all. It is totally automatic.
Yes, you go to the garage, select the car and you are on your way. EC makes it very easy.

Thanks Gail, I think you're our National Car Rental expert. Joining Emerald Club saved me at least another $50. Gotta love these boards. We're off tomorrow, yippee!!:wave2:
