Can sexual offenders be rehabilitated?

I know a lot of people also feel that sex offenders should be treated as mental patients because when you get down to the basics it may just bea mental illness. I don't personally believe that sexual urges are so strong a person can't overcome them, I think rather that when someone HAS these types of urges it is so beyond comprehensible and embarrassing they don't know what to do with themselves. I mean is there even places for people to go to say "hey...I have something mentally wrong with me, I'm fantasizing about the little neighbor girl who is 4".:confused3
You know they are going to start an investigation immediately on this person and what they are feeling is labeled as so "sick" they are afraid they are going to have NO ONE who wants to even associate themselves with them. I'm not trying to make light of these offenses, I'm just wondering as a society what we can do to PREvent them from happening instead of always having to look hindsight after some little girl is found dead. :sad2:

The majority of CONVICTD offenders who receive treatment do not re-offend. Some do, but most don't. The problem is that nobody can predict who will be successful.

The article also says that the majority of offends are never caught. I assume that also means re-offenders. IMO the people in that article are talking out of their ***, in reality they don't know any more than we do.

I don't believe for a minute that child molesters can be rehabilitated. They are attracted to children, period. I know there is more to it than that but the attraction is there and no amount of rehabilitation is going to change that. They may learn to control it but how well is that really going to work long term.

IMO child molesters should be given the death penalty. Since that won't happen I can only hope that the law opens it's eyes and starts locking them away for life.

And since I always want to say something when I see castration come up in these threads....
Castrating a pedophile is like take a weapon away from Rambo, he's got plenty more weapons where that came from and sometimes those weapons can do more damage.

God can save his soul, but here on our earth he is a risk to every child.

God can have them as soon as they have been executed, as far as I'm concerned.

.

I feel the same way. I don't care why the person acted on trhis horrendous urge, I don't know not do I care if he can be rehabilitated. Some crimes just stand on their own....no second chance.

ETA There is a predator not far from my house. I have my 8 YO DGD here often. We have little kids in this neighborhood. This monster was nto sleeping with his underage GF< he is a fiend. It is now impossible to send the kids to the bus stop without an adult there. It is impossible to let the kids ride their bikes down near his house. It is impossible to go into the basement to swap wash unless the door is locked. Who is punished for this predator? Not him. He can come and go as he pleases.....these babies and these children cannot. Our neighborhood is not going to be part of those news stories that we have had to listen to when officials admit that in retrospect....the monster should never have been let out. I think erring on the side of caution with these violent offenders would be more fair.

It's a good thing we have the constitution in place with the 8th amendment.

Also, prison is nothing more than a graduate level education on how to be a better criminal.

I wish rehabilitation could be a reality for all sexual offenders. I think of the many victims that have been in the news, and the prior offenses and/or jail time of the perpetrators. It makes me mad at the system when there is a repeat offender and it breaks my heart all at the same time. :(

I wish there were a better way to protect society. I don't know what that would be, but I hope someone does in the near future. So terribly sad.

I'm not talking about an 18 year old who gets caught having sex with his girlfriend. But a guy like this Creep in Cal who killed Chelsey King. No!!! He can't be changed and should have gotten the full 30 the first time he attacked a young girl so he wouldn't be out on the street to kill Chelsy and probably Amber Duboius (?). I know... innocent till proven guilty. Just sayin'.

No they can never change, it's already in them

"it's already in them"???

What a strange thread. Let's all give our opinions and then fight over them, knowing that we cannot possibly change each other's minds.

A true sex offender? NEVER!

Now, the 17 year old girl that willingly sleeps with their 18 year old boyfriends for months until the parents catch wind and press charges?:rolleyes1 My heart breaks for them :sad2:

They are classified by the law as the same man who rapes 3 year olds :confused3

I agree with you and I'll take it a step further & say the 15 or 16 year old girl who does that & sometimes they even lie about there age. But a true sex offender no way no how.

when did they start sleeping together? at this same age? The guy must be an idiot to be sleeping with a girl under 18 if he is 24, or else has never heard of anyone being busted.

Oh you'll love this... they've been doing this for TWO YEARS!!!!!!!!:sad2: Both of them should know better! Consenting or not, the parents might not see it as willing on both sides. I'm curious how it will all play out.

But after they've committed the act, have been arrested, gone thru the rehab process and released back into society, they re-offend more than any other single felon on the face of the planet. Studies have proven, they cannot be rehabilitated and a wishful thought of hoping they can be doesn't make it so.

The 2nd time however, they normally don't want to leave the witness behind to ID them. Sadly, too many of our children are paying the price for "sympathetic nature."

Oh, and if one wants to bring God into this, the Bible is in favor of execution if you commit murder (man switched the commandment to kill, originally Hebrew text however said murder - and I don't think there is a question that they are vastly different). God will never condone murder (though some murderers may eventually find salvation, but that is between them and God and I don't have much of a stomach for it).

forget it. Decided not to share this story.

Well, if I had my way all hands and fingers would be cut off as well as toes. But society deems that cruel so it would never ever happen. I don't care though, what these people do are beyond sick and whatever they get they deserve.

These people are attracted sexually to someone like you and I are attracted to the opposite (or same) sex. This is like trying to "rehabilitate" a homosexual to make them straight. It doesn't work!

Agreed. On Nancy Grace the other night, the psychologists were discussing the monster in CA who raped and murdered two teenage girls. He had already served 5 years in prison for attempted rape of a 13 year old, and was released. The psychologist said that violent sex offenders only become more dangerous with time because if they are caught, the only thing they learn is not to leave a living witness the next time. This guy escalated from being "just" a rapist, to becoming a rapist/killer.

In my opinion, violent sex offenders are the most dangerous kinds of criminals, and should never be allowed into society again.

.

Or you could say it is a pesky thing ;)

Are you following the Petit case in CT? Two monsters followed a woman and tehn planned an home invasion. What ahappened to teh two girls and their mother was unspeakable. The girls were tied to the bed adn we have heard that they were alive when they were set on fire.

Well jury selection is on now, the older one hid medication adn tried to commit suicide. Tjhis was his second attempt. He is now secluded, the lights are on so that he cannot take his own life. This is a direct result from his actions. The judge has been petitioned that this is cruel and unusual punishment. The lawyer is also trying to show he is not fit for trial.

I have never really endorsed the death penalty, I generally feel that felons should not be treated badly. In this case I think this guy should be treated to the same circumstances he treated that poor family to and I would light the match!

Both of these men were violent offenders but the charges had been degraded. They were on parole when they murdered.
