"Can people really have 2 left feet?"

I love how literally my kids take things. My ds asked me if people can really have 2 left feet and I told him I have 2 left feet, so he asked me to show him my feet. Then I had to explain to him what that meant. He wanted to know where that saying came from and I had no idea. Anyone know?
