Can Motorcyclists do whatever the want on expressways?

Your perception of how fast the motorcycle is going is distorted by the size of your vehicle in relation to the bike and the noise the bike makes. I have several cops in my family and 2 of them are motorcycle cops.

When you think they are weaving in and out of traffic they are doing the same that you do in your car when you change lanes but since they only need one fourth the space you need in your car they appear to be unsafe.

When you say they had to be going 90+ when you were traveling 75 mph they literally would have been out of your sight in less than 15 seconds. The loudness of the motor tricks your hearing and makes it seem like they are traveling faster than they really are.

Splitting lanes is legal in many states and there are several states that are looking at making it legal.

Of course none of these facts makes you personally feel safer.

While true the actions of a motorcycle are exaggerated, at a difference of +15 MPH, the bike would only gain 330 feet on you over the course of 15 seconds. It would take a full minute to gain just 1/4 of a mile.

I hate the split lane laws. I think all traffic laws should apply to everyone using the roadway, regardless of what they're driving. DH has a bike he uses for commuting every day, and quite frankly, it terrifies me. I trust him to be safe. I do not trust other drivers to pay enough attention to anything smaller than a semi truck. There are idiot drivers everywhere - everyone needs to pay more attention to their surroundings.

I know somebody who got a ticket on a motorcycle. In fact, they really threw the book at him, he said that he even got what he called was the "one wheel bonus". He is kind of wild anyway. I think riding like that in front of the state police is just asking for it.

They're tough to catch, those crotch rockets have great acceleration, and are easy to hide. I think the cops figure it's a self-correcting problem, at some point they're going to make a stupid mistake, and there are no fender benders on a motorcycle, chlorine for the gene pool.

Yep. We had a young fella here near my New York home who I saw several times on I-87 with his crotch rocket doing wheelies at well over the speed limit. One day he came down from the wheelie with the front tire a bit off center and crashed and died.

In my area, it appears that most motorcyclist drive pretty safely. Not sure what it's like in other parts of the country.

All I can say is, if I were driving a motorcycle, I would want to be as cautious as possible. I've only rode on a motorcycle twice (as a passenger of the driver), and I didn't like it much. You're pretty vulnerable on a motorcycle.

That's really sad.

I don't see how splitting lanes can be safe. I see cars meandering into the next lane without really paying attention way too often and then you combine that with someone on a bike without a helmet. It just seems dangerous for the riders.
