Can men wear tank tops in restaurants?

Loops, you asked the question, you got the answer. Yes you will see women and men wearing tank tops. You will also see women with very low riding pants and when they sit down a large portion of their rear end is visible. Or maybe their thong. Or maybe both. I guess my question regarding tanks is this: Are they really that much cooler than say a short sleeved cotton tee shirt? I just cannot imagine that the extra few inches of exposed skin would make one's park day a cooler more comfortable experience. It does however show some body parts/hair some people would prefer not to see. That is why you got some of the anwers you got. This is an ongoing subject on these boards, the subject of good taste and dress etiquette. Different people have different comfort levels. Things that used to not bother me (I had the attitude that if somebody had the body to wear it why not?) now do as I don't want to feel embarrassed in front of my children.

IMO, men's tank tops are really intended for athletic endevours or undershirts. Just like swim suits are meant for swimming, not walking around the parks. :duck:

If I question whether an item of clothing is appropriate or not for me, I err on the side of caution and I don't wear it. I agree with WebmasterKathy about carrying a shirt with you.

So very well put. ::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

To me, grown men in tank tops are like grown men in speedos....unless they are in a sporting event.

Will DH be kicked out of a restaurant or refused entry, most likely not. That being said, if one has to ask if a type of dress is allowed, than somewhere in their mind they know that whether or not it is allowed, that item of dress will be offensive to some or is just inappropriate in that venue.

i also can't stand men in tank tops, unless at the gym....but that is my op, and why my dh doesn't wear one. do i care what other people wear, nope.

if some rest. won't allow it, then change b4 going in. great idea, on having the button up shirt to throw on over it, that way he won't even have to button it up, if he doesn't want to. very versatile.

he can wear whatever makes him comfortable, and happy..it is disney, and vacation to boot. time to relax.

all you wanted to know was the dress codes...i am sure that there are plenty of links that someone has, that can give you specific answers. but i would think that common sense will work just fine.

on why women are ok in tank tops... my op on the that is.... that women's tanks seem to be much dressier, and neater, and fashionable. (unless the women didn't shave her pits either, but that is for anther thread,j/k)

hey maybe if dh shaved his pits, it would be better?!!? nope prob not.. :teeth:

enjoy yourselves, and trust me, what dh wears is not shocking at all to some of the outfits (if you can call them that) that you will see.

I could care less what someone else is wearing in most places but where it really bugs me is in a buffet!

We were at a chinese buffet last summer and a guy came in with an oversized tank top on and as he went to fill his plate and I had to watch him reach his hairy armpit over the rows of food to reach what he wanted I was SO grossed out! It is not something I would have ever even thought of! It just caught me off guard but ever since I saw that I have had a hard time at buffets in the the summer time! .

Sorry if that grossed anyone out!

By the way my DH and I have eaten at Ohana's and chef mickey's and he always wears one of his many character T-shirts. If we were going any where fancy he would dress up but he wasn't at all out of place with a T-shirt on! ( I had mine on too!)

crossing chinese buffets in summer off dining lists :crazy2:

My brother wears a sleeveless tee or tank with a button up shirt over all the time. I think this is the best solution if your hubby wants to wear a tank top. Depending on the time of year the air conditioning in the resturants can be quite chilly...this from someone who never gets cold!

Also....just so you know...in the American South....tank tops are called "wife beaters".....I had no clue what someone was talking about the first time I heard it!

I have seen many diverse opinions on dress at resturants....some people are of the opinion that one does not wear shorts to Yachtsman steakhouse....I have worn shorts there and not been the least bit uncomfortable.

Hope all goes well.

IF DH wears a tank top I imagine he'll be able to get in most of the "non-hotel" restaurants. For those places with a "dress code" (like those mentioned by Ducklite and maybe including spots like Bluezoo, etc) I'm not absolutely sure what would happen. Most likely he'd be turned away, as the bathing suit/tanktop prohibition seems to be an enforced part of the code--but also possible he'd be allowed in.

I am having trouble believing this thread. I personally haven't noticed if the people around me, men or women, are wearing tanktops, let alone how much body hair they have! :confused3 Maybe I'm spending too much time paying attetion to my own table.

Well said. :earsboy:

Well I was going off buffets in the first place but this really does it for me.

:crazy2: Ack! That's NOT a pretty picture - Thankfully, it is one I have not yet seen & I hope it stays that way!

Males of the species should never wear tank tops, except while competing in a sporting event for which a tank is required (e.g. gymnastics.) Period.

I guess the buffet thing may have been what I was trying to get at. Since the OP did say Chef Mickey's and that is a buffet, that wasn't a pretty picture I was getting in my head. Also, to the question about the inappropriateness of women wearing tanktops to a dinner, like another poster previously said, most women have bare underarms, and if they don't, I don't think alot of people would particularly care to see that hanging over the buffet pans either. I guess to me, it boils down to a hygiene issue at least at the buffet restaurants. Some may say it's more cultural, maybe that's true too.

Edited to add: This topic reminds me of when I went to order/sample cakes for my wedding. The girl who took the cake order was rather earthy, if you want to put it like that - she had on a tank top and didn't shave either and the whole time I was saying to myself "Oh please only take the orders and not have anything to do with actually making/decorating the cake. It really almost turned me off from ordering there, but this place basically had the best reputation for wedding cakes in our area so I just prayed that was where her duties stopped.

Wasn't sure where to post this.

Can men wear sleeveless tank tops in restaurants? So far we have PS's for Chef Mickey's breakfast and the Ohana Dinner.
t-shirts are best

Loops- You asked a question and people gave you their opinions! I don't think anyone meant to offend! princess: :wizard: princess: princess: princess:

Tanktops depend on what restaurants you are eating in.

The resort restaurants..for dinner, usually request the equivalent of resort casual..which at disney means no tank tops or swim attire. At breakfast and lunch..when people are heading out to the parks/playing in the parks I am sure there are tank tops in the restaurants. Swimsuits..never allowed and are not suppose to be worn in parks either.

Yikes on the tanks-yes I have seen them but I've only seen one guy that looked good in it! Hey loops maybe your dh was the one guy- If so wear the tank! ;)

Of course, the question was "can" you wear a tank-top--not "should" you wear one.
webray: Seems I see more and more swimwear in the parks every time we go. Shirtless men also from time to time. They always walk right on by CM's and no one ever says a word--

Actually not all men's tank tops are called "wife beaters" it is only the white cotton underwear style tanks that you buy in the packs in the underwear aisle. If you've ever seen an episode of Cops you will see why they call them that.

I've seen lots of men's tanks or muscle shirts that are ok for in the park and I've seen many men wearing them while dining in the parks - I find it more offensive to be sitting by someone really stinky from being in the parks all day then those wearing tanks.

As someone who lives in a much cooler climate, I can tell you for certain that at least to some individuals, the difference between a T-shirt and a tank top can make a huge difference between being miserable or not in the Florida heat. I have probably eaten at 90% of the sit down restaurants in the parks with a tank top on, and never felt the least bit guilty about it. The vast majority of these meals were lunch, but a few dinners mixed in here and there. I wear what is comfortable for having a nice day at the park, and will not change my clothes to eat when I am already in the park. Of course, you will not see my hairy armpit hanging over any buffets, nor will you see me eating lunch or dinner with my arms over my head. It is common sense if you are wearing a tank top to make sure the world does not have to look at your armpit. As for resort restaurants at dinner, I always change from my park attire into dinner attire.
