Can I take 2-ft pre-lit Christmas tree on plane?

Does anyone know if they will allow me to take a small artificial Christmas tree on the plane as part of my carry-on baggage? The tree is 2-ft tall and is pre-lit. It is in the original box. The box measures 22 inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 6 inches deep. If not, could I gate check it?

This may be a silly question on my part, but why does it need to go carry-on?

As for your question, this may want to be asked to the airline itself.

Not a silly question at all! I don't have room for it actually in my luggage. I could check the box, but it is a pre-lit tree. I am afraid that all the bulbs will be broken when we arrive if we check it.

Has anyone tried this before? I guess I will call the airline and see what they say. Thanks!

If it is pre-lit by means of lighting built into the branches, I don't think it will be a problem carrying it on. If it has a light string wrapped around it, you *might* get an argument from TSA, but I doubt it. I carry on hairdryers and electric curling irons all the time; why would something that is essentially a low-wattage lamp be a problem?

You should be ok IF the box size is within the size your particular airline allows for carry on bags (the 22" is close). Might go to your airline's website and find their carryon allowance-that should answer it. Suspect it will however count as part of your total baggage allowance for the total # of bags you can have.....

Thanks for your help! I called ATA, and they said it shouldn't be a problem carrying it on as long as it fits under the seat or in the overhead compartment.
