can I lose my reservation if I waitlist something else?

I lurk a lot and I seem to recall reading some people have lost their original ressie's through the wait list process and ending up with nothing. Did I misread that?

We have a 1 bedroom reserved for late Feb. My sister has asked to come along and because we are already a family of 5, really feel we need a 2 bedroom to accomodate her, but they are full.

If I ask to be wait listed, is there anyway I can lose that original ressie? I love my sister, but don't want to have to explain to my 3 and 5 year old we aren't going (they are already counting down)

btw, this ressie is made partially with developer points.

Thanks for any insight you may have

I don't know about developer's points, but with regular points you don't lose your reservations when you waitlist. They don't even move you until they have the whole reservation at the new resort.

You would have to waitlist with "real" points. Developer points can't be used for waitlisting (I learned that last year after I supposedly was waitlisted). Big problem with that is then you have developer points that still need to be used.

I did have an example where I 'lost' my reservation due to waitlisting but was lucky it was SSR in Jan and was able to rebook. I had reserved 3 nights at SSR and 6 at VWL. I wanted 7 at VWL so waitlisted for the last night of my 3 night SSR stay. I had them put notes in the system that if my waitlist came through I'd want the last, overlapping night at SSR canceled. My waitlist came through but my points looked funny. I called and they had cancelled the entire 3 nights at SSR. The CM I spoke with said the notes in the system clearly stated I only wanted the last night cancelled, luckily the CM was able to rebook. I would have been out of luck if it was a busier resort during a busier time of year... I learned next time I'd tell them I don't want the overlapping night cancelled, then after my waitlist comes through I'll call and have them cancel while I'm on the phone. Will only work if I have extra points to spare..

So it sounds like it can happen, but really only due to MS error. We have non developer points we could borrow from to make the wait list happen, but then we'd probably have to cancel and rebook with the developer points...way to risky for me.

Like I said, I love my sister, but I am not going to risk my whole vacation so she can stay in the same room. i'll just help her make a cash ressie

Thanks!
