Can I just tell you....DX Update

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.

It's about the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and a serial killer.

It's fascinating and dull at the same time.:)

That book gave me the creeps. The history was interesting, but it really disturbed me how much he did without it being noticed.

I love my Kindle as well, and it sure beats trying to cram any more books on the shelves.

Yes, you can. And then I'll tell you how much I love my Kindle app for the iTouch, although I'm using the e-reader app more, because you get more book for the buck at Fictionwise.

how much I LOVE my new Kindle?

My birthday was 6/4 and my parents gave me a kindle for my birthday. I am totally loving it. I spent all Sunday morning searching amazon.com for just the right book to download for the first read! Dork, I know.

I would totally be the same way! It would take me forever to pick what to get first! Like a kid in a candy store! Did you pick something yet? :)

Did you pick something yet? :)

I am usually a murder mystery, suspense, psychological thriller type person. But I ended up buying Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. I guess it is technically a mystery series. I bought the book Sunday morning, started Sunday afternoon and finished it yesterday afternoon. So it was a good read!

I like the same sort of books too. Glad you were able to pick a good first one to enjoy on your Kindle. I'm waiting to see what happens with the new Kindle that is supposed to come out- the third one, I think. Unless it is out already, but I didn't think so. After that, then maybe it would be a good birthday or Christmas present. :)

my mom can only read books with a larger font, can you change the kindles font size?? If so this would be great for her!!

We love our kindle's too! They are a lot of fun and so portable.:goodvibes

You can change the font and it can read to you too... with or with out earplugs. The voices are "electronicy" but ok.

Amazon had to include the ability for a publisher to disable the text to speech function. Random House is the only publisher who has started using the "kill bit" but keep that in mind if you need the function.

There are some blind-advocacy groups who are exploring if this is something that violates the ADA. I don't know if it does or doesn't but I don't want to see (no pun intended) anyone get the device for that function only to find their favorite books don't have that feature.

You can change the font.

There are 6 font size settings.

The largest setting is approximately equal to a 20 point font in Word.

Hope that helps.

My wife is really liking the Kindle Iphone App a bunch.

But, she has talked about getting a "regular" kindle as well.

pro's and cons of each in your opinion Kevin if you don't mind before we shell out a couple of hundred bucks?. :goodvibes

Pros

- holds 1500 books
- can subscribe to newspapers and magazines and have then delivered
wirelessly
- more like reading a "real" book than the iPhone app (which I also have)
- portability. Awesome for travel.
- downlaods book in 60 seconds without a computer
- saves the space of 1500 books
- "greener" that 1500 books
- Books can be shared betwen Kindle and iPhone.
- Font size....any book can be a large print book
- Remembers your place in the book you are reading, even if you jump to
another book.
- Book prices. Most hard cover books are $9.99 instead of $25.00
- Charge lasts quite a while. You can make it last longer if you turn wifi off.
- Isnt back lit, making it easier on your eys.
- Lighter than a hard cover book
- Amazon keeps your purchases on file making them avaioable to you even if
you delete title from your Kindle

Cons

- Pricey
- Uses this weird "location" thing instead of page numbers

I have the Kindle iPhone app and while it's great when you are stuck in line or waiting in the Drs office....who can actually sit down to read on a cell phone?
The back light will eventually cause eye strain and you will kill your battery flipping pages.

That's it. I cant really think of anything negative about the Kindle.

I have choice words for the publishers that do this - have come across 2 books already that have this problem. I'd tell you what the words are, but this is a family show.....

another small one - apparently Whispernet is not available in Europe. I suspect I could download manually, but seem to have left my propeller hat at home :rotfl:

This thread having sparked my interest, I went to Amazon to read some of the reviews. One person said that he loves it but some of the books he has bought have been "pulled" and he was not able to download them again even though he paid for them. This part bothers me some.

Although 1500 books is alot and the third one will hold twice as much, I guess I probably wouldn't need to delete any books for a very very long time. Or maybe there is a way to save deleted books on your pc, just in case. And there is also the point that most books I never re-read anyway. But still... :confused3 Any thoughts about this? :)

I bet you could download them to your PC so then you don't have to worry about the book being "pulled". Hadn't heard of that but honestly I've had my Kindle less than a week.

Two pro's (someone asked for pro's and con's) that I am enjoying are rather silly but here they are:
*When I'm curling or straightening my hair I don't have to find something to hold the book open and then stop to flip the page and then reestablish my book holder (can't imagine why Kevin didn't mention this is his pro's :confused3)
*It is easy to sit or lay in any position and continue to read you don't have to worry about which side of the book you are reading from and readjusting it, etc.

I forgot about the ease when "hair straightening".

Silly me.:rotfl2:

Actually, those are very good points! :thumbsup2 I don't read while I'm curling my hair though- that is what the podcast is for! :rotfl: But sometimes I like to eat while reading and it is hard to hold a book and a sandwhich at the same time. And I hate flipping sides in bed to read the other side of a book because my arm is tired of holding the book open!

Another bonus just occured to me. You could even read in line at Disneyland (and/or World). ;) If they offered Disney books and guidebooks that would be awesome! :thumbsup2
