Can I just tell you....DX Update

You know what sounds better for Fathers day? Mike! Tell 'em!!

Got one for Amy at christmas. She loves it and there was a time she didn't want it. wish that was the case. i couldn't saved 300-400 dollars lmao.

Hmm, this may be a good idea for a father's day gift. Can you read it in the dark at all? Does it light up I mean? We use book lights a lot around here to not disturb each other so I'm wondering if I can use it with no lights?

It does not light up.

You would need an outside source of light.

I believe that they sell an optional clip on light that fits over the back...

I'm not sure, though.

I just told my husband last night that I want one for my birthday in August...now I want one NOW :)
I love reading and the only thing I am worried about it my kids who are readers too will want to 'borrow' it all the time.
I didn't know about getting the older books cheaper. That will be great!

Any chance some of you techies could tell me how to get around the fact that amazon.ca does not offer Kindle or the books for downloand and I can't order from the .com website here in Canada. Even when I have my laptop in the states the sites know I am Canadian!! I want this SOOOOO Bad!!!

Try using someones computer in the states, or a library.

So once I have bought it and had it shipped to a US address, I purchase books through the device so it shouldn't matter where I am at or from after that? I wonder if it would decline my Canadian credit card :scratchin

Get yourself a US based proxy. You won't be able to use the whispernet but you can load the books through your PC. The TOR network allows you to specify your exit point geographically. I will warn you it requires putting on your propeller hat to configure but it will take care of your non-US IP.

I would get a Kindle, but I have always wanted to have a large bookshelf when I got older. I remember walking into my professor's office one day and seeing his massive library that needed to have it's own Dewey Decimal System. I have ALWAYS wanted that. I'm kind of like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I think the Kindle would hinder me from reaching that. I know, I'm old fashioned.

I have read this thread with great interest. I've always been interested in them but didn't know anyone who had one. Now, most of my questions have been answered. Except, how long does the battery last? Do you charge it up the way you would a Nintendo DS, for example? (From an outlet) Or do you have to charge it from a USB in the computer?

1) The battery lasts days.
2) You can charge from either your PC or from a wall plug. The unit comes with a USB cable; the USB plug also plugs into the wall wart to get power.

I have the 2nd gen ipod touch. (About $300.00). It is just like an iphone w/out the phone. I downloaded the "Kindle" application for free. I connect with my wireless internet connection, and I am able to get Kindle books. The best part? It has a back light! I was reading it in a dark theatre the other day. I really am happy with it. It doesn't have all the features of a Kindle (I don't think it reads to you), however I like the light up option. Besides, the ipod touch is awesome for so many other reasons!

... I have to add that if you ever have a problem with your Kindle, Amazon.com customer service is awesome. Mine just died about 9 months after I got it (Kindle1), and resigned myself to the fact that I would just have to buy another one, since now I can not live without it. I decided to try calling Amazon Kindle CS to see if they had any tips before I bought a new one, and they sent me a replacement, free of charge, no questions asked!!!! it arrived in like 2 days!!! I was very impressed- it seems that they can see how long you have had it through the activation info, so they knew I was still within my 1 year warranty. Now I love my kindle even more!

You suck!!!! Just kidding! I am so jealous, I want one so bad but we can't get the books here in Canada. We can get a rip off version with limited publications, but not the real thing!

I know they reviewed it on CTV news last week and compared it with another brand. The Kindle is better.
However what good is that when it is not available in Canada!:confused3

Thanks! That sounds like the best of both worlds. :)

I got my Kindle last November and LOVE it! I have always been a book junkie, and packing for beach or leisure vacations always involved several books taking up valuable suitcase space. My boyfriend is so frustrated over the shelves filled with books that I can't part with...

The beauty of the Kindle is that my library can grow and grow, but the physical space in my already cramped basement library does not get more crowded. My inner 2 year old LOVES the immediate gratification of "I want it now" and 60 seconds later, I am reading!

For example, a few weeks ago I was listening to the podcast from the podcast cruise, and before the end of the podcast, I had downloaded "Creating Magic", the book discussed, for my Kindle.

Visually, the text on the page feels very much like a book; it's kind of hard to describe, but it's not like reading on a computer screen...it feels more like paper to look at. It's very comfortable, and I love that I can move around to any position I would normally read in and there's no change in the visibility of the text.

As far as the battery goes, as long as the wireless is turned off, it will last for several days, unless you are doing a really long marathon weekend or something. I was sick a few weeks ago and curled up and read for about 10 hours a day, 3 days in a row, and by the third day, I needed to charge the Kindle. Usually though, I go a week or two between charges. When the wireless is on, even if you're not actively using it, the battery goes a lot faster.

I've even taken it to the beach (in a ziplock just in case) and was surprised how well I could read in the sunlight.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Kindle. Could live without it...but don't want to! One word of warning: it's very easy to impulse buy and spend more than you planned to...Electronic books ARE cheaper, but when you buy way more of them because you don't have to worry about carrying them to your car, or fitting them on your shelves...well, let's just say the vacation fund could be at risk!!!

:goodvibes

I want one!

Kevin, are you sure you aren't getting commission??

The Kindle 2 also has the "text to voice" feature on most books.

It will read to you.

I also agree that after a very short while, you will not see the gadget...especially if the book is engrossing.

Wow! That would be amazing for me! Sometimes my eyes can get a little tired from reading (mainly academic books, but sometimes normal fiction) or the sentence structure is a little odd so I don't understand what it's saying (yay being dyslexic!). I am an avid reader when I get the time, and my boyfriends uncle sells them... maybe I can get discount! :scratchin

Great customer service too. I was Kindle pre-Oprah, before Kindle was cool. I just posted to Facebook that I'm very pleased. Amazon is sending me a replacement Kindle (first generation - as that is what I have). Mine is about 10 months old and it's developed a crack on the back cover near the on/off and wireless buttons. Since it's never been dropped or anything, I think it must be a stress fracture or a week place in the plastic. I wasn't sure what they'd do, since it's technically still working, but they are sending me a replacement this week.
