Can I have some prayers and PD for my son please? UPDATE pg 5

Hugs and prayers to you and your little boy. I've got a 4 yo (will be 5 on Sunday) and I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through.

Keep us updated.

He had an abdominal ultrasound and x-ray this morning - the results are a mixed blessing!

The results came back as "No significant abnormalities", so there does not appear to be any organ damage causing the problem (which rules out such things as hepatitis), but means there still is no conclusion on the cause. :guilty:

The ruling out of organ damage, however, would strengthen the Celiac Disease theory. He has an appointment with the pediatric gastroenteroligist on Monday afternoon, so I will find out more then.

Thank you for all of your prayers and thoughts.

God bless you and your little boy. You are definatly in my prayers. I went through something similar when my son was that age and I never want to do that again. Hugz to you.

Well, that's good to hear that there are no abnormalities! How exactly is Celiac diagnosed--bloodwork or other means, and how soon after you see the ped. gastro will you get an affirmative diagnosis? I'm sure the sooner you know, the better you'll feel.

Keeping you all in my good thoughts and prayers.

If you find out it is Celiac, I'd be glad to contact DH's cousin and see if she has any websites to share. I know she's done a lot of research and much of it has been online. Send me a PM after you get a diagnosis and I'll drop her a line if you'd like. She even knows the names of restaurants that will work with you, etc.

I think there are also support groups. I saw a sign once at our church about a Celiac group that was going to meet there. That would be something that might be of great help to you. A place to share recipes and get some support from people who are in your shoes.

Well, from what I have read on the internet, some physicians will diagnosis it based on the symptoms and if they seem better after eliminating gluten from the diet (which would seem like proof to me :confused3 ), others take it further and require various laboratory tests.

:grouphug: hugs to you and your DS...poor little guy. Hope they get a dx soon and he can get to feeling better.

He saw the Pediatric Gastroenterologist today. Still no definate conclusions, but I am feeling a lot less stressed.

He has to go for some lab tests (blood tests and urinalysis) on Wednesday morning. The doctor said that these tests will cover about 90% percent of the possible causes. If these all come back normal, that would mean it is acid reflux or irritable bowel syndrome causing his problems. And he said that though his symptoms are indicative of something more serious in an adult, in a child they can be symptoms of reflux or IBS, which, while things that would need to be controlled, are not quite as serious as the other possible causes.

He does believe that Aiden has some reflux, be that his whole problem or a symptom of something else, so has prescribed him Zantac. He also put him on a high-fiber diet, which would be helpful if it is IBS.

He usually gets up several times after he goes to bed to tell me his tummy hurts. He took his Zantac tonight and fell right asleep. Hopefully that means it is helping.

Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers. I will update again after I get the lab results, should be by Friday.

My sister's son (now an adult) had Celiacs Disease and I can tell you it was very painful until they got it under control and got him on the right diet.. Still to this day he has to be careful of what he eats, but very rarely has pain anymore..

Poor little guy - I'll certainly keep him in my thoughts and prayers and shower him with pixie dust.. It's so sad when little ones are sick like that.. :(

Thanks the update! We'll keep good thoughts for Aiden's next appointment. :)

Celiac Disease should not have pain involved - just major digestive issues, vitamin deficincies, etc. I was misdx with it when they were trying to figure out my issues - which they found out was Crohns because I had pain, and Celiac doesn't involve pain.

Celiac is very very common - but is grossly undx in the States. Most other Western countries have figured out how common it is and their doctors are able to spot it easily. We're behind the times, unfortunately. Many people have it and have no idea. Our foods are not friendly to Celiac patients, either, though that is getting better. More and more restaurants are adding gluten free menus. More and more grocery stores are stocking gluten free foods. It's getting better but one has to really be a good label reading - and yes, people are so sensitive that things cannot be cooked in the same place that gluten foods were. Or processed in the same factories. Some are not that sensitive.

There are several on this board with Celiac or have family members with it - I've spoken to them at length when I was dx with it.

In order to REALLY know it's Celiac, you need a biopsy of the villi in the small intestine. That is done through an upper endoscopy. There are no concrete blood tests that guarantee it's Celiac. My bloodwork pointed to that but it can also point to other things - like Crohns. Obviously, for me, it was Crohns. My biopsy was normal. When a Celiac patient consumes gluten, it damages the villi and causes them to shrink up. This prevents nutrition to be absorbed and other digestive issues. It's a step beyond a gluten intolerance. It can also be referred to as Celiac Sprue or just Sprue.

Common symptoms are gas, tiredness, bloating, weightloss, abnormal stools, etc. Most people have such light symptoms that they pass it on as IBS or nervous tummy and never get dx.

For others, switching to a completly gluten free diet proves to sold the issues, even if they opted to not do a biopsy or the biopsy came back normal. I ate gluten free and saw no change - so it was fairly positive that my biopsy was indeed right.

My prayers are with your baby boy - I hope answers are found soon and that they can give some meds to relieve his issues. I hate to see little ones sick =(
