I just threw out some old (way past the expiration) bread crumbs

So I made some toast and chopped it finely for dinner purposes.

But-this bread is Texas toast. Not sure why DH bought that, but it will most likely not get all the way used up.

So can I make bread crumbs out it and freeze them?

I hate to toss out what I pitched earlier today. It is just wasteful!

Thanks

When I'm being especially frugal, I freeze the ends of loaves of bread and use that for breadcrumbs. So I would say yes.

My grandmother used to do that all the time - she'd save the ends of loaves and any getting-stale odds and ends in the freezer, then when she had a good mess of them she'd grind them up into breadcrumbs and freeze those in Tupperware to use as needed. I always loved her breaded pork chops and I think the part I can't seem to replicate is that mix of white/wheat/rye/pumpernickel in the bread crumbs.

You can freeze almost anything.

We regularly buy extra loaves of fresh bread and freeze them. We double bag them for the freezer.

We also keep our bread in the refrigerator, and it does not go stale or get moldy in there. I'm assuming your bread was moldy, and that's why you threw it out. Otherwise, there was nothing wrong with it. Just toast it.

There are fewer at home now, so I'm going to start freezing smaller portions and take out just a couple days' worth at a time.

My Mom would freeze bread all the time when I was growing up. I need to do this more often too, instead of throwing it out! It would be perfect for bread crumbs, meatloaf and stuffing. Just thaw it out...then pop it in the oven for a little bit to dry out, then crumble!
Thank you for the reminder! I am going to start doing this too! :goodvibes

I do it all the time. Any kind of bread. I just keep adding it to the ziplock bag in the freezer and occasionally start a new bag.

We've always frozen bread also - so I don't see why breadcrumbs wouldn't freeze well. Give it a try!

I sometimes buy bread my family loves at Costco, but it comes in a two pack. One goes straight into the freezer - it's not the best for sandwiches, but perfect for toast - just take a couple slices and put them frozen into the toaster.

I would do that too - just freeze the bread, give it a quick toast and then grind for crumbs (I use a coffee grinder that hasn't been used for coffee for probably a decade, wonderful wedding gift from 20 years ago!). I have to make my own crumbs since DS is allergic to dairy, and a lot of the Italian breadcrumbs seem to have cheese in them (why I don't know!).

I also sometimes use Stove Top Stuffing ground up for crumbs in meatloaf - seasons it super well (and use way less salt since it's loaded with salt, think last time I didn't add any extra salt and it was fine with all the other stuff like ketchup added). Sometimes with coupons and sales it's so cheap.
