I'm not too sure of what is and is not allowed to cross the boarder. I have brough back cheese from Europe, customs throughly checked it. Can I bring anything with us? Boxed cereal bars/snacks? I would bring it in my carry on because i know sometimes the drug dogs freak over food in checked luggage.
Off topic, can you buy beer at duty free on the way down to MCO?
Thanks!

I've taken granola bars, oatmeal, cereal and potato chips with no problems. I think the only restrictions are citrus fruits and meat products for the US.

Wow! A Disney honeymoon and wedding! You must be sooo excited :p

We just got back...on the way through US C&I, we were questioned extensively about the snacks in our carryons for the kids...we deliberately took only Nutragrain Cereal Bars and some chips, nothing homemade, and I think the Customs guy must have been having an off day - he wanted to see the pkgs???

We showed him, he said "well, ok", but it sounded like we were supposed to be bringing them with us...

Never happened to us before:confused:

HTH!!:sunny:

Citrus and meats are the only big ones. They've never asked me if I had been to a farm recently, except when coming in from Europe (never from YYZ or YUL, or even YQB or YHZ). Given that you don't grow a lot of citrus in Canada, there probably isn't a lot of reason to bring any along with you (coals to Newcastle, as the saying goes). As for meats, I have only brought in sausages and pâté, and as long as they were sealed in plastic (and I didn't mention them), I have done just fine.

I'm glad you liked my tag!!

Were you traumatized, too?!!:sunny:

Sorry for the hijack!!:sunny: Back to the munchies....

Went down in FEB for 3 weeks and packed a cooler full of munchies. (No ice and no dry ice are allowed since they can leak.

We froze a few water bottles and took a couple of lunchable with us but NONE WITH BEEF!!! They won't allow beef of any kind. Not even beef jerkey.

We also took energy bars, granola bars, etc...No problem. Hope this helps.

Just a side note, at a boarder crossing in NB, there was a man that bought DOG food in Maine and on his way back to Canada, it was not allowed in. He then tried to go back to Maine for a refund and the border guards there would not let him in...He was stuck on the bridge...He opened the bag and tossed the loose dog food over the bridge...What is a guy supposed to do????

Get out the Fishing Poles!! :boat: Betcha there were some happy fish that day!!

LOL!!That poor guy...

I was also wondering about them inspecting food I am taking on the plane for my two young DDs. One is an infant and I want to take some powdered cereal with me. Should I take an unopened can or box, or can I take some in a container? I really don't want some person opening a small container with this rice cereal in it and having a good look. I was going to buy some down there rather than lug it all with me. As well, we were going to make some homemade muffins, would that be a problem?

Thanks
Kerri

To be on the safe side and to extinguish any possible misunderstanding, it will be best to bring any food item in their original packaging, especially anything that is in powder form and/or medicine/supplement/vitamins.

If you read this link , you'll find that home-made food for personal consumption is okay.

My suggestion is to print out both links (the one above and the one I rpeviously posted) and carry them with you. If you follow the instructions to the "t", then the customs officer can't argue with you. You can be confident in informing them that you've read and thoroughy comply to the guidelines stated by the Homeland Security and FDA websites.

Hope it helps.
