I don't think "masses" of people do this, but it's not unheard of. When refrigerator swaps were in full swing, quite a few of them acquired other appliances along the way, including toasters and coffeemakers. We once brought a single-cup coffee maker (WELL before the days of Keurig) to WDW with us, set it up on the table at POP, and had in-room coffee all week. Nobody mentioned it, nobody confiscated it, nobody threw us out. For decades my mom always traveled with an immersion heater, and that was probably the most dangerous thing I've ever seen; no guard around the heating coil, no auto shut-off, etc., and small enough to hide in the bureau drawer when not in use!
OP, you should have no problems flying with a toaster in your checked luggage. I am sure that TSA has seen MUCH stranger things!!
