Strange question....my husband needs white noise to sleep. Wondering if we can bring a box fan on board and if we'd be able to plug it in somewhere in our room? Yes, just call us the hillbillies bringing a fan on board.

Wouldn't it be easier to bring a white noise machine instead? And you wouldn't look like hillbillies, lol!

My husband is the same way and we did bring a fan. It worked great and he had no sleep issues. :thumbsup2
Our fan was a smallish, round desk fan and it fit inside his suitcase just fine. We sailed on the Dream and had a Verandah Stateroom. The desk is kind of close to the bed so he plugged it into one of the outlets on the desk and pointed it towards the bed, worked great.

Does it need to be a full size box fan? You can get a smaller fan, or a white noise machine like suggested above. I don't think they will tell you you can't bring it, but it would be a pain schlepping around a full size box fan and it would take up space in a small stateroom.

I bought a small battery operated fan and brought it along!

I personally wouldn't take a "box fan". I have a round 5" x 5 1/2" desk top type fan that I use for travel. Puts out plenty of air and just the right amount of noise. I got it at Wal-mart for around $6 or $7 a couple of years ago. It fits into the suitcase and takes up very little room.

I use a fan as well and I was wondering the same thing! I have a teeny tiny "box fan" as well and I think it'll fit in my suitcase just fine. I thought I might be the only fan addict out there! :rotfl:

We always carry a small desk one, too. We like the noise and the air! :cool1:

We too travel with a small fan for white noise. I did see there is an app for white noise for an iphone/itouch. It was only 1.99 I think. I plan on buying it and testing it to see how it would do. Otherwise, the small fan will continue to fit just fine in our suitcase, and IS a necessity for our family!

We took a fan our past few cruises. and it isnt a tiny desk one. :) It helps with the humidity in the room too.

My DH and DS both sleep with a fan aimed at their heads or else they get "hot-headed" LOL.... we bring them with us on vacation. They are slim vertical desk fans about 14 inches tall and 4 inches square around. Just make sure you pack an extension cord!

It’s pretty amazing how most people who responded to this question totally ignored the actual question and instead offered advice on what type of fan they think the OP should use… smh

I always bring a small fan, beware though, if it plugs into an outlet on desk, they will take it out of your suitcase and inspect it. I just purchased a battery operated fan that u plug into usb to charge, and they did not inspect it (this was the Fantasy 2 weeks ago)

On our last cruise, we turned over our fan to be inspected, and we didn't get it back until at least the third day- after calls and trips to guest services!

Just like you responding to a question from 10 years ago?

#ghostthread
No, it’s actually nothing like it at all, nor is it anything like you following a thread from ten years ago, and there are others who have responded recently, so it’s clearly still a topic of interest. Thanks for following me, by the way.

When a thread gets a new post, it gets moved to the top. Threads at the top get more clicks than those on page 100.

My guess, as you are a new member only reacting to this thread, you most likely googled something about bringing a fan on board of a cruise.
That is usually how threads from years ago get revived. A new member doesn't realize that it is a ghost thread.

Famous here is the popcorn thread that gets revived every few years similarly. Https://www.disboards.com/threads/popcorn-kernel-stuck-in-my-throat-update-its-gone-p-8.2523536/

So for more current information since this thread is from 2011 and rules have changed over the years:
  • Battery-operated fans or one with a UCB plug are fine
  • Fans that plug into an electrical outlet must be inspected by an electrician onboard before use
  • If you only need the white noise and not the air movement, consider a white noise app on your phone
