Can Grumpy get Happy on a Disney Family Vacation? AKL CL 1/09 PTR

My countdown ticker says 3 days!!!! and my facebook countdown says 3 days, 5 hours, 22 minutes and 18 seconds (but who is counting!) My computer wallpaper is now of Cinderella's castle in the clouds with celebration balloons-thanks Disney!

Weather report looking great- high in ther upper 60s to low 70s from Thu-Monday. Doesn't look like rain. Who can complain about that???

Hosting a pampered chef party tonight and will start packing! I may run over to the Disney store to see what I can find for sweatshirts for the kids for the evenings....

DH is getting the suitcases down. I want to put his binoculars in before I forget. He has great binoculars that we always forget to bring places.

Karen,

I found your trip report from you sig in the CL thread. I can't wait to hear what you think of the sunrise safari. I do think we will do the sunset one. I have to wait until May to make my reservations so maybe we will do the sunrise one too.

I know what you mean about feeling quilty telling your friends. Sometime I feel guilty just thinking about it. This will be our 3rd year in a row (last two staying at POR). This year we are doing 3 nights at POP and 7 at AKL CL. My DBF has actually been laid off for a bit but expects to be back full-time soon. The whole trip is a gift from my mom so are going all out. I keep thinking we should be staying at POR and put the extra on bills but she said to spend it all on the trip so I am :)

Please share details when you come back so I won't feel guilty about upgrading to AKL CL. My 40th b-day is in September so the trip is partly my b-day present. I would love to know about the food at the CL lounge. I love to eat (especially desserts). I can't wait to hear about the illuminations cruise. What a treat.

I would also love to know about the special "things" at AKL. Like the story telling. I also thought I read about some cooking tour in the afternoon.

Have a great trip & thanks for the trip report.

Hello all! In 24 hours, we should be boarding our plane! We got about 1 inch of snow today but since it is such a rare event here, the kids had a snow day! This is our first winter here (we moved from the Reno-Tahoe area) so we find this very amusing. We all watched the inauguration and I am trying to finish laundry and packing. So what am I forgetting???

"My DBF has actually been laid for a bit..."

What's so bad about that? Oh...never mind...

I really need to get my head out of the gutter...:rotfl2:

That sound you just heard was my DW sighing and rolling her eyes at me. :sad2:

Our area of North Carolina shuts down when it snows, didn't you know??? :rotfl2: Have a great trip and I can't wait to hear all about it!

We are back and had a fabulous wonderful magical time. It was so hard to leave, Orlando was absolutely beautiful today. I will be starting a detailed trip report and will post the link to it once I get it going. Not sure if I should post dining and hotel reviews separate from the trip report or how to organize it. Any suggestions??

Greetings fellow Disney travelers and dreamers! The Mouseketeer Family has returned from 5 fabulous nights at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Club Level! To keep the memories alive, create a great record of our trip, and to stave away any Post Disney Depression, DD9 (Minnie) and I (Belle) will be co-authoring this trip report!

A few of you may have read my pre-trip report, "Can Grumpy Get Happy on a Disney Family Vacation?"

If not, let me introduce you to the Mouseketeers. Me and DH (aka Grumpy):

Disney World, here we come! That's right, we're going to Disney World. And could I be anymore excited? No way! I found this out on the last night of Hannukah. My brother (aka Baloo) and I had gotten certain clues in our previous presents, but we never got the hint. So, as I was saying, my Mom (aka Belle) sent us up to the 3rd floor of our house while she hid clues for a scavenger hunt. Then she brought us the first clue. The clue said that our present was hidden and we needed to find it. That sent us off throughout the house looking for clues with puzzle pieces. At the end, when we put the puzzle pieces together, we found out we were going to Disney! I screamed as loud as I could. Then, I found out that we had to wait three weeks until we were going. I didn’t think I could, but I tried to hold my excitement in. After I found out that we were staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge on an actual animal reserve, I felt like I was going to burst. My parents had it all down on video camera so I wouldn’t forget it ever.

The three weeks we waited seemed sooooooooo long. Belle was going bahookie planning every single little detail about our trip. She also changed her computer desktop to a Disney background. Belle also had many surprises in store for us. I started reading some research books on Disney but after reading for a little while, I thought it gave so much away that I wanted some things to be a surprise. So I stopped reading.

When the 3 weeks FINALLY ended, we started packing for Disney World. I didn’t think I needed a lot of things to entertain me since we’d be in the parks all day, and I didn’t. But I did bring my American Girl doll, Molly.

When we got to Animal Kingdom Lodge, I was very, very tired. But I decided that I was awake enough to try the African Smoothie in the lounge on the 6th floor. It tastes like pineapple juice and mango juice blended together and there may even be a hint of coconut in there. It is really good. You should try it!

When we went into our room, I found out our first surprise. We had bunk beds! I l really, really, really excited but we had to find out a fair way to see who got to sleep on the top bunk for one extra night because we were staying 5 nights. I remembered that on our family cruise we took a while back, we had bunk beds then too, and I was the one who got to sleep on the top one extra day. So I let Baloo be the one to sleep on the top bunk. Since Baloo got to sleep on the top three nights, I got to sleep on the top bunk on the top bunk on the first night.

Here is a picture of the bunk beds that Minnie just wrote about! When we arrived in our room (about 7:40pm), the beds had been turned down. One nice feature about the bunk beds is that each bunk has its own light and switch.

This is so exciting. My family is from Benson, NC (SE of Raleigh) and we are staying at AKL June 14-21, 2009. I'm definitely on-board for this TR--Minnie and Baloo are about the same age as my two children so I'm ready to take notes.

Jumping in!! Great report so far!! Can't wait to read more!

As Minnie said, I was really going bahookie these last few months. What exactly does "bahookie" mean? I am not exactly sure- it is a word Minnie recently made up. It must mean crazy or obsessed. In any case, I had been spending virtually every spare moment online reading and planning and plotting and scheming. I had selected AKL because of what I read about the beauty of the resort and because of the animals. It also helped that the price seemed great for a deluxe and club level wass only $35 more per night! When the 4/3 deal came out, that sealed it. I eventually had 6 nights booked- Wednesday through Monday nights. I knew we would actually be leaving Monday afternoon, but the price was the same and this allowed us that little extra time in the room without worrying about check out times.

Are you flying? Do you have your tickets yet?

Here is Belle's Best Tip #1: subscribe to farecast alerts at farecast.com.

What a great free service. I got daily emails showing me the best price for my tickets and a suggestion about whether I should buy now or wait. You can also see the history of the price of your itinerary to get an idea of how the price fluctuates. I watched it over time and scored our tickets for $178 each roundtrip. Definitely the best price over the three months I watched (I kept watching after I purchased.) The one problem with the tickets was that they were purchased from united for a usair flight. When we checked in with usair, there were issues with the reservation. They did get fixed, so all in all, still worth it. (The same tickets on usair on the same day were over $70 more per ticket!)

Schools were closed Monday Jan 19th for MLK Day. Turns out we had a snow day on Tuesday the 20th as well. There was about 1 inch of snow that didn't stick to my driveway or sidewalk, but this is Charlotte, so no school. Schools were scheduled to be closed Friday 1/23 and Monday 1/26 for teacher workdays, which is why we scheduled our trip for 1/21-1/26. Minnie and Baloo would only miss one day of school. But Tuesday night we got a recorded call announcing school would be in session on Friday as a make up for the snow day! Ugh. A little more work for Minne to make up, but she is a great student so I wouldn't let this bother me.

We headed to the airport directly after school on Wednesday and-the first magic of the trip happened- our plane was there, our seats were together, and we left on time! (ok, my flying expectations are very, very low these days.) We had an uneventful flight and landed in Orlando about 6:15. Our luggage was some of the first out (thanks to DH's priority status with USAir- he travels weekly), and we hiked down to Avis. Again, thanks to DH, we were able to bypass the counter and go straight to the parking garage, but it is a long walk. I think we left the airport around 7:15. We saw a Magical Express bus as we left the airport, so for us, the rental car route was faster but may not have been worth it as we used it so rarely.

Belle's Best tip #2: If you are driving from the airport, be prepared for tolls!

We handled the first tolls, but the last toll was for 50 cents and had no humans manning it. There was no way to pay! So we just drove on through. Oops. (There will be some other rule breaking later in the trip!) We didn't set off any sirens or bells or notice any cameras so I guess it all is ok.

Next up: Our arrival at Animal Kingdom Lodge!!

great so far, keep em coming.
Thanks Mike! I will post a bit more tonight but then will have to take a break until Sat or Sunday. I leave early tomorrow for Oregon to present a workshop on Friday morning.

I am jealous that you get a whole week at AKL! You and your children will love it. Please let me know if you have any questions for me or Minnie (or even Baloo who may jump in with a few posts of his own. This is the home version of "writers workshop"!)

Jumping in!! Great report so far!! Can't wait to read more!
Thank you! I will post a bit more tonight.

Hooray, I figured out how to multi-quote! That was fun! :cool1:

We tried to convince Baloo that we were now heading to Africa, but he insisted that Africa was nowhere near Disney World. So much for immersing ourselves in fantasy.

As we approached AKL, the busy Disney World roads quieted and the bright night sky darkened. We arrived at what would be our tranquil home for the next five nights. We stopped by the guard gate who handed us a gold colored parking pass for our dashboard. We then pulled around to the main entrance, noting the small fires burning along the side of the road.

Initially, there did not appear to be any cast members nearby to help with luggage or welcome us. Remembering the instructions provided us by the IPO office (who handled our club level arrangements), I took Minnie and Baloo into the lobby, walked to the left to the Bell Desk, and informed them that we were checking in for club level. They seemed to already be aware of our arrival. Perhaps the guard at the gate called. I was told that Rhyan was on her way, and she arrived within the minute. She welcomed us to the resort and announced that she would personally escort us to the 6th floor Killamanjaro Club Lounge where we would check in. She suggested that we wait in the warm lobby while she ventured out into the chilly night to fetch DH, Grumpy, who I spotted unloading the luggage with the help of a valet. Rhyan told us that our luggage would be delivered to our room, so we all joined her in the brief steps through the lobby to the main elevator. I was immediately struck with the beauty and warmth of the lobby and resort. I have seen many pictures of the lobby, but truly, the pictures do not do it justice. You have to be there in person to absorb the detail and ambience.

She shared a bit about the resort as we rode to the key-access only 6th floor. We were then introduced to Melissa, the concierge working in the lounge that evening who checked us in with ease.

We were provided a map of the resort, a Guide to the Magic! booklet (which, by the way, is in the new "Celebrations" theme) concierge information, and other information about AKL including an activities schedule and newsletter. Melissa also provided a printout of all our ADRs and was about to review it with me, when I interrupted because there were several surprises that I didn't want Goofy or the children to hear. (She told me that had I informed the IPO office of the surprises, they would not have printed them on the itinerary!) In any case, I had been in close contact with Don from the AKL IPO office, and was well aware of all our ADRs, etc.

As it was about 7:45, the lounge was in between its Twilight Offerings and the Evening Indulgences which would begin at 8pm. Beverages were offered, so we all helped ourselves to some African Smoothie. As Minnie described, it seems to be a pineapple coconut juice of some sort, and was quite delicious!

Gold Key to the World Cards in hand, we left the lounge to find room 4507!

Ahhh!! Sounds like a warm and welcoming check in! AKL is beautiful! We stayed there in 05. The lobby is stunning! I love club level check in! We stay CL at GF last March and its so swift, easy and relaxing! Can't wait to read more!!

Karen-
We were also at AKL CL from 23-25th. We were in room 4307. It was a very fun but quick fun trip for us. We went to AK on Friday and then to MK on Saturday then unfortunately had to leave very very early in the AM on Sunday. You and your family might have saw us in the CL lounge Friday or Saturday night. It was my husband and I and our 3 little kids (DD-5, DS-3 and DD- 10 months old). We were usually sitting on the sofa that was on the other side of where they had the water, ice tea, & africian smoothie drinks.

AKL CL is wonderful. I would recommend it 100%. I just wish our stay was a little longer.
