Here is the background:

The grandparents live in The Villages, Florida, close to WDW. They were planning to join us on our WDW vacation coming up in February. They planned to purchase an annual pass for our DS9, that we were to use both for our trip this February with them, and a future trip for Thanksgiving this year.

Recently, my FIL has suffered heart problems and is now scheduled for a cardiac ablation (heart surgery, which he says is a more "minor, less invasive" kind). The inlaws will now not join us in Feb, but wish for us to continue our vacation plans without them. They are currently in Florida, but will leave before our trip and will be in Virginia for the surgery, which is scheduled during our trip.

So basically, from reading through this forum, my understanding is this:

1)they could buy him an annual pass right now while they are in florida, but I think it would need immediate activation, and I'm not sure they can do that since he is not with them now

2)They could buy a voucher, but I'm not sure we could activate it ourselves in Feb without the inlaws as we are not florida residents

Is there any way that this could work out, or are we going to need to buy his AP ourselves at the non-resident rate?

Thanks!

I don't believe so.

I hope your FIL's surgery goes well. :goodvibes

Sorry your not a resident so no matter the situation you cold not get this rate.

Thanks for the responses. That was what I was afraid of. In the past, we have paid for our IL's resort stay with us and they have provided a night of free babysitting and bought DS's annual pass.

They were hoping to do the same this year since they will vacation with us again later in November, but now that plans have changed and they can't join us in February, it looks like we will just buy his pass ourselves at the non-Florida rate.

Hi Tigger!

Okay, so grandparents can indeed buy annual passes for kids under the age of 18! The grandparents can go to any ticket window - has to be in person - show them a Florida ID, or proof of FL residency - a bank statement, mortgage, bill, insurance, or car registration - and buy a child's annual pass. As long as they tell the vacation planner that the child's address is their address - that's all they need to do. They can even buy it on the monthly payment plan.

Only requirements is that it has to be in person - if they get a voucher for him, someone with a FL ID would have to be there in person to redeem it. The annual pass would start the day they bought it, not the day you guys started using it.

Please feel free to PM me with any further questions. :)

This is SO not kewl.......

Not technically true. It is perfectly okay in Disney's eyes for grandparents to purchase FL resident tickets for their grandchildren. But they do need to be there with the kids when the passes are activated for the first time.

As for whether it's "kewl" or not ... Disney allows it (and will tell you so if you ask at the GR window), so who are we to say that it's wrong?

:earsboy:

1) WOW.
2) Lots of information - good and bad. (WDSearcher has it right !)
3) Here is the dope
. . . grandparents CAN by any pass or ticket for non-resident kids under 18
. . . the kid's ticket has the full Florida Resident discount
. . . they do not have to lie about the kid's address
4) We have done this for years.
5) Both, with the kids present and with them not present with us.

NOTE: For annual passes, if the kid is not present, we have to buy a
voucher. Then, as Florida Residents, we MUST be with the child when
they convert from voucher to pass.

I can see why Disney would allow this, what if the grandparent is the one vacationing with the child! I know when I was a kid I used to spend summers with my grandparents in Florida and we used to always take trips to Disney.

If they child is staying with the grandparent and the grandparent is the one taking the child to Disney and paying for the AP, it would make sense that they would get the Florida resident rate.

This is definately "kewl" Disney WANTS grandparents to bring their visiting grandkids to the park. They generally have limited income but this is a family experience they encourage. Disney establishes rules to keep others from taking advantage but let's face it, Disney doesnt have to have fla annual passes at a reduced price at all. They do it to encourage locals to come and bring their visitors as well.

I did some work for a man not too long ago that was in this exact situation....grandkids came down and spent the end of summer with them and they took them to Disney. Disney had NO issue with them buying their grandkids FL res tickets since the grandparents were.

So does this mean I can purchase FL annual passes for my nieces and nephews (under 18y.o.) when they come down?

I have ZERO experience here, but just reading the thread, I would think the above might be an issue. Today you have grandparents and no kid, later will be kid, but no grandparents. I think kid and grandparents have to be together to get the pass. :teacher:

Yes. You will be buying them "exchange certificates", not actual passes. And you will need to be present, with your valid Florida ID in hand, when the certificates are exchanged for the actual passes. The policy reads (in part) ...

  • [*]Children under the age of 18 are not required to provide proof of Florida residency if they are accompanied by an adult with valid proof of Florida residency.
[*]Guests with an exchange certificate must present a valid form of Florida ID when the exchange certificate is redeemed for the actual pass.
[*]One ticket only per valid proof of Florida residency (a Florida resident may buy tickets for minors in the party)

I have the same question. My aunt and uncle (FL residents) are joining us for a family trip at Disney. My 2 nieces (also their nieces) are minors and will need tickets. We're wondering if my aunt and uncle can get them the Fl discount tickets. We would not be willing to lie and say the girls live with them.

Edit: Just realized someone answered budmonster's question. Nevermind!

I just called WDW and the representative confirmed that under 18 does not need to be resident or show proof as long as adult shows proof of his or her own residency. She even used the grandparents reference and confirmed it could be niece, nephew, cousin, etc.

While this is true, you will find that the info on these boards is more reliable than that given by a random CM on the phone.

Sorry, but this is not correct. Grandparents that live in FL, with a FL address, can indeed do it for their grandkids - just not their entire family.
