Trying to arm myself with all of the necessary arguments for and against membership.

You can use points for any of the 3 hotels at Disneyland. We stayed at the Disneyland Hotel last November using our points. Friends of ours were at the Grand Californian also using points. It's a nice option to have. Good luck!

Yes, all three Disney hotels at the Disneyland Resort (DLR) are offered via points.
You can also use points at Disneyland Paris as well as the Disney Cruise Line and at least 100+ other non-Disney resorts WORLDwide... These non-Disney are through the Concierge Collection (CC) and Interval International (II).

Although the best deal for your dollar is to use your points at DVC resorts, you can also find savings using points vs. out-of-pocket rack rates... just not as deep of discounts... (non-DVC discounts run about 30-40% vs. up to 70% savings at DVC resorts).

From our own experience on questioning buying in to DVC as well as others' comments/questions I've read on this board is to examine your vacation preferences now and forecast out a few years...

Such questions that seem to pop up as makers or breakers for membership include:

Do you plan on taking a Disney Vacation at least every other year?
How much would you spend on the accomodation portion of these vacations?
What are your accomodation needs? Typically, DVC resorts offer more bang for the buck in terms of bigger rooms w/ more ammenities (kitchen, washer/dryer)...
How many points would you use per year?
How many points can you afford, not only for the initial "investment" but also for the yearly dues?

Good Luck

We are going to be buying into BCV due to we can go to WDW and we can go to DL/DCA also. We live in AZ so its less expensive and easier r to fly to CA then to FL, but we prefer WDW over DL. We love the DL Hotel and the GC Hotel at DL and if we went back to DL we would be using our points at either hotel for 2-3 nights.

There is one thing about buying into DVC you are not stuck going to WDW with these points. You can go elsewhere (ie Hawaii, do a Alaska Cruise etc).

Dodie,

That is how we paid for our stay last March at the Grand Californian, with DVC points. It was wonderful.

If you're interested in actual point costs, here's a range:

Disneyland Grand Californian

Value Season: Weekday = Sun-Thu 26-42 points/night depending on room type (see below)

Value Season: Weekend = Fri-Sat 47- 76 points/night

Regular Season: 28-45 weekdays, 50-81 weekends

Peak Season: 32-49 weekdays, 58-88 weekends

Disneyland Hotel

Using the same order as stated above, points are:
23-35, 41-63; 24-37, 43-67; 26-41, 47-74

Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel

19-34, 34-61; 21-37, 38-67; 24-40, 43-72

For the GC hotel, the range of rooms varies as follows: Standard, Downtown Disney View, California Adventure view, Concierge regular, Concierge California view

For DH they are: Standard, Resort/pool view, Premium resort/pool view, Concierge regular, and Concierge premium.

For DPPH they are: Standard, California Adventure view, Premium California Adventure view, Concierge/city view, Concierge California Adventure view.

Thanks everyone! TnRobin and I were actually at the Grand Californian at the same time in March 2001, but we never bumped into one another!

See my signature and you will understand why we are seriously considering this move, LOL!

We spent a week at the Grand Californian last April using our points.
If you are used to the hotels on site in WDW, then the only hotel in Anaheim that you'll find to be their equal is the Grand Californian (though if you stay at the Wilderness Lodge you'll discover that all the wood and metal are actually wood and metal: at the Grand Californian everything is actually plastic!).
The service at the Grand Californian is impeccable. The older Disneyland hotels do not compare if you're used to what you get in Orlando.
This is not, mind you, the most economical way of using your points, however it's a helluva lot better than spending $350 bucks a night!
Can't wait to stay at the Disneyland Hotel in Paris!

P.S. If you've got the dough, and staying at Disney all around the world is really what you want to do for the next 40 years (like the rest of us nuts!), there are NO good arguments against membership in DVC.

We used pts. to stay at Grand Californian last Aug. We read all the debates about using pts for hotels & how it is not $$$ well spent. We felt it was a great use of pts. & highlights the flexability of DVC. Each member can use it to meet their specific needs.
