Can child (under 3) w/o DP use his magic band?

My son is under 3 so he's not on the dining plan, but I can see him wanting to "pay" for the meal. I know the dining credits are pooled per room so would he be able to use his band to pay for the meal or would we have to "trick" him and have the CM scan his band and then my band? Thanks!
