Can anyone tell me how to add an applique?

I am making DD a cute outfit out of this new fabric they had at JoAnn's with Minnie Mouse Heads all over it. The top will be made out of it and the capri pants will be plain yellow.

I want to applique a big Minnie Head on the pant leg. But I don't know how.

I haven't done this in a long time, but the easiest way I used to do it is just cut out the design and use something like heavy duty iron on interfacing to back the fabric. That gives it enough body that you can sew or zig-zag it onto the other fabrics.

My mom has also used double sided fabric adhesive to do something similar (on my wedding dress, in fact). Basically you iron onto your design and there is a paper backing on the other side. You let the adhesive cool and then peel off the paper and iron it on again.

Do you have to sew it on any particular way? What setting do you use on the machine? I don't want the applique to come off in the washing machine.

a very short zig zag. you want it to look like a satin stitch...
