well canon told me today nothing is wrong with my lens or camera and i just don't know how to use the camera i have used almost every single day for the past yr( they say when the shutter won't depress it's cause the buffer is full, it's writing to a card, i am panning and it hasn't focused...none of which are the case...why didn't they add did i have the camera turned on, did i have a battery in it, did i even have the camera with me or was i just looking through my fingers and think i was using a camera:mad:   ) so since no doubt if it's the same problem within a month my camera is not going to work at all with that lens and who knows if it will work with anything else... i am considering selling it all and going with nikon but not unless the customer service is better so that is why i am asking the question. if not i probably will just upgrade the body like i had intended but then if something goes wrong i am still stuck with canon cs. i don't really want to sell it all since that 's a pain but i don't know what else to do.

kind of a side question but i would also like opinions as to what i should make canon do...i think i have been pretty patient with them and now am just plain mad. they basically have fooled around for 6 months, used up 1/2 my lens warranty and have left me right where i started 6 months ago except if it is a camera problem, i won't have a camera either since the warranty is over( 2 days ago) .... i don't know if the lens is the problem the camera is the problem or if both are the problem but what would you ask them to do if you were in my shoes...i'm writing a letter but i have a tendency to either chicken out or just get irate so i want to know what is reasonable here....thanks

Sorry for your troubles. I've been following your woes and feel badly for you and the troubles that it's caused you.

I really don't know how Nikon's customer service is because I've not needed it. Guess that is good and bad........ Maybe others that have had some experience with their CS will respond.

Both Nikon and Canon are offering a low end DSLRs that get people in the door , but don't offer what the photog needs to grow into the camera, at least for any length of time. Instead, they suggest planned obsolesces and upgrade to another camera. This is the main reason I went with the Nikon D200. Hoping that the ability of the camera would keep me engaged and not wanting to upgrade for at least a couple of years. The D200 has been great and offers SO much for the dollar that I feel it's been a great value to me.

Come to the Dark Side grasshopper!! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

A week ago Thursday I had to send in my 18-135mm lens because it would not focus properly. I sent it via Fed Ex, they received it the next day. Didn't hear anything from them and I started getting nervous. This past Friday, 8 days after I sent it in, they had sent it back, saying the replaced the focus motor and something else and did a thorough cleaning. It works perfectly fine now.

So my experience with Nikon CS is 100% satisfactory at this point. This was the first time I've ever had a problem with any lens in the 18 or so years I've been an owner of an SLR camera.

I do feel bad for the trouble your having Jann. I wish there was something we could do. Have you thought about sending the lens to someone else? Like maybe another member here that uses Canon or maybe someone in your area. See what they think. Just another thought. Then if another user is having issues, you can go back to Canon with that info saying its not just you.

just out of curiosity...is that a vr lens...i really wonder if it's something with the vr/is which would totally give me cold feet about getting in body IS.

No it is not a VR lens. Just a regular ol' lens. It is fairly new though.

I've called Nikon's 24-hour technical support line a few times. In fact, I went ahead and put it in my phone's memory just in case I need some help when I'm out. The phone support people have always been friendly and knowledgeable.

I never used the phone support when I shot Canon so I can't compare it. I didn't even know it was available.

In-body IS is probably going to be more reliable than in-lens IS... the moving parts aren't as small and fiddly, and I haven't heard any tales of anyone having problems with their in-body IS systems. I'm sure there have been, but I seem to hear a lot more about lens issues. Furthermore, it's worth noting that often, a single lens with IS can cost as much or more as the currently-available DSLRs with in-body IS.

Really, when it comes to lenses, there is something to be said for simplicity. I've got a few lenses that are almost as old as I am. I'm probably going to visit the local photo consignment shop on Saturday to pick up one or two more old ones. I recently shot a roll of film through my father's 50-year-old Kodak that I found lying around - it probably hadn't been used in several decades and it seems to work just as well as it did when brand new, and produced very acceptable-quality prints, probably as good as its fairly cheap lens will allow.

The only camera CS I've had to use was for Sony, to fix a bad sensor on my wife's first digicam, a Minolta X20. There was a recall for the issue and they turned it right around and also replaced a couple other parts (inc. the lens IIRC), I was very pleased overall. I think they even paid for the shipping to them.

I'm sorry that you've had all these problems, really I am. You're much more fun when you're not miserable from dealing with CS issues. :teeth:

I hope your letter gets to someone who will actually listen and understand!

I'm guessing your lens and camera never went to the irvine repair center eh?

no the last time they sent it to corporate offices in NY...guess they don't want to pay the extra $1.50 if would cost to send farther..I asked Customer relations guy about it and he said they do the"exact same things" so guess that doesn't say much for either place:laughing:

you know groucho as spunky as i can get sometimes i hate turmoil like this kind of junk so that probably comes across...sorry to all if i have been more cranky than usual( hard to believe as that might be:scared1: ) in my posts

jann,

Your not cranky, upset, and IMHO rightfully so, but not cranky.

Right, I didn't mean to imply that you were being a pain or cranky, but certainly we'd all rather hear some happy posts and good news from you rather than see that you're still enduring all these headaches. You deserve better!

Hopefully we will hear some good news soon although I fear that this is going to be an uphill struggle.
