Can anyone expain the "meal plans" in detail?

I saw them refrenced on another thread and I was wondering about them. I have never heard them mentioned before.

How do they work?

Are they a good value?

What are the restrictions?

We have done the meal deal at AK at Pizzafari. I am not positive on the prices but for like $6.00 plus tax you get a childrens meal at participating resturants, a coupon for free ice cream or popcorn and a coupon for a free pop or water at the stands in the park. And they have to be used on the same day. And adults I believe is around $12.00 plus tax and you get an entree and then the same coupons as the childrens. We have found this works very well at Pizzafari for the childrens meals. The cheese pizza is normally around 6.00 but if you do the meal deal, you get a cheese pizza, chips, drink and then the coupons. So I think you really save alot here.

My DH and I have done the "discovery magic" plan twice now. The Silver plan is now the equivalent.

Both times, we have found that we've definitely gotten our $$$ worth. (The first time, more than the last time because it was only 1 wish to eat at all the restaurants that require 2 wishes and you also received an appetiser, salad/soup, entree, desert & non-alcoholic beverage for dinners.)

Each wish is approximately worth $30-$37 depending on what you pay for your package. With that in mind, you get more bang for your wish if you use the wishes for dinner (even the restaurants that require 2 wishes) than for breakfast. A sit-down lunch at a 1-wish restaurant is also cost effective. You come out ahead using the wishes for dinner shows. Cirque and some tours and spa treatments. Avoid using the wishes for breakfast, buffets or merchandise.

We do not have children - I have read on this board that families' wishes are not seperated into adult & kids, even though children pay a reduced rate per wish. Families can use the total wishes as they like. However, I would think this plan would be most cost effective if you have older children or teens than if you have toddlers with smaller appetites.

We also had reserved MK fireworks, EPCOT Illuminations and AK parade viewing with our package. The locations are really nice and uncrowded compared to other spots and you only have to arrive 15-30 minutes early.

Where do you get this plan from? Also, do you have to book a package to do the dining plans, or can you add the plan to a room-only reservation? We're DVC members, so that's why I ask. I'd be interested in looking into this to see if it would be cost-effective for our next trip. Thanks!

Do you have to get the silver plan for everyone in your party. My 3YO only eats once every 3 days or so, It would be a waste for her, but my hubby, and I might benefit.

BUT....

the adults can use the childs wishes for their meals.

As children's wishes are much cheaper than adults, they make it more cost effective to use them for breakfasts.

We did this last christmas with my niece and my mother. Paid cash for each of her meals, except for dinner shows and a couple of others, then use the extra wishes for extra meals for the adults, cut down on costs greatly.

We even had a couple left at the end of the trip and picked up a couple of souviners.

The silver plan is around $62 (ish) extra per adult per night. You have to do it with the packages that include rooms and UPH. There is no other way to add on just meals (even though that would be a great idea). If you look in the resort boards there is always a thread going about the plans. Also, everyone in the room must also be on the plan. I at one point sat down and figured out realistically what we would spend if I did everything separate versus the plan and the plan would of cost my family almost $500.00 more than buying things separate. However, that was because of the choices we would of picked. It does have the added conveinence of having most of your food paid for.

chrissyk - that would be sooo good if they offered this plan to DVC people on a room only basis I'm wondering if they (Disney)lose money on this scheme where the food is concerned which is why it's tied into the UPH and Room package ?
