Can An Atheist Be President.

Can an atheist be President?

  • It wouldn't matter to me. I would vote for the "man".

  • I would prefer to vote for an atheist.

  • I would only vote for someone who believed in God.

  • I would only vote someone who is in my religious denomination.

President Bush (41) is on the Imus Show. He quoted Abraham Lincoln who said, "You can't be president unless you spend some time on your knees". President Bush said when he said that, the atheist "got all over him and said are you saying an athiest can't be president?" and President Bush responded, "yes". I agree with him. Can an atheist be elected president? Would you vote for an atheist?

I shudder to think of an atheist being the leader of our country, and would never vote for a candidate who did not believe in God.

Doesn't make a bit of difference to me. Religion should not factor into politics -- it's not a good mix, IMO.

There is supposed to be a separation of Church and State, so it shouldn't be a factor. I would vote for an antheist if he/she was the right person for the job.

ITA with Bob -- Religion and politics should not mix. Just because someone is an atheist does not disqualify them to be president.

Just because Abraham Lincoln said it and Bush 43 agrees with it doesn't make it so.

I would ABSOLUTELY vote for an athiest. Why does it matter whether or not you believe in God???

I believe I said BUSH 41. FORTY-ONE! GEORGE HERBERT WALKER BUSH.

I'd vote for whomever I thought was the best person for the job.

I think something a lot of people overlook is that just because a person does not believe in God does not mean they are devoid of morals and ethics.

Technically, sure. . . realistically? I seriously doubt it. .

I think a more interesting question is: could someone who believes in God but is not a Christian be elected?

 41 -- 43 -- what's the big diff. Still doesn't make it set in stone.

Ditto.

I'm not a religious person...but that doesn't mean I'm without morals/ethics.

And, as someone stated earlier...politics and religion do not mix

I do believe that someone starting his day out on his knees is being led in the right direction.
One would be very egotistical to think he could do it without guidance from God.

Whether some people like it or not, the United States is not a Christian nation, nor affiliated with any other religion. I feel that religion shouldn't make a difference in an election.

Being religious does not mean being a good person. Having religion in your life does not necessarily mean having morals and being qualified for political office. Similarly, not having religion does not mean not having values and morals.

I totally agree with you. The majority of the voting public does not. The voting public will only vote in Christians - of some demoniation or the other -- in this day and age. This mindset, unfortunately, rules out a lot of good people.

No, I don't think an Atheist would ever get elected as President. For the same reason MosMom said.
