Can a dog wet the bed??

This is going to sound odd, I know. I wasn't sleeping very well last night. DH had a nightmare and ended up going downstairs in the middle of the night, and the dog sneaked up into the bed beside me. I was too out of it to make her get down. Next thing I know, around 5 a.m., I put my hand in a wet spot. Here, she'd wet the bed and was still sleeping soundly in the middle of it!

It was a very timely accident, because my DH had bought me a new bed and mattress set for Christmas.

Have you ever heard of such a thing with a dog? Should I be worried about her? She's not old at all -- only 5 years old. She's not prone to accidents.

I don't know. I need to keep an eye on her and take her to the vet if she starts acting odd.

It wasn't strong urine either -- you know how strong it is after they've held it all night. It didn't have a strong smell at all.

It's possible. My dog often licks at her paws when on my bed, which results in a wet spot. So there may also be another cause.

Maybe she's licking the bed? Petey does that sometimes so much that the spot is SOAKED! But anyway, it would be odd but not unheard of for a dog who's been potty trained for years to have the occasional accident. She is an animal after all. If you don't think she's got a bladder problem or anything like that then I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again soon.

I suppose licking is possible, but I don't believe so. I was sleeping so lightly last night that if she'd been licking, I think I would have woken up enough to stop her. And it's really WET, wet -- soaked clear through the comforter to the mattress.

Like I said, I'm just glad we got a new set.

If it is a Spanial, they do have wetting problems, but if it isn't it may have a bladder infection.

This happened with our yellow lab. She would be sleepig soundly and then have a wet spot. At first we thought maybe it was sweat or something because it would show up on the basement floor but then 2 times I called and woke her from a deep sleep and she peed.
Took her to the vet checked out not infections but they say some dogs who have been fixed have problems with peeing in their sleep. She gave us a pill to give her 2 times a day. We are now down to one. No more problems. It is a weak bladder problem.

OMG!

That's what's funny. I went downstairs to wake him to see if it WAS him! He woke up in a panic and started checking himself out and said, "Whew! Nope, wasn't me!" DH has a sleep disorder and acts things out from his dreams. Now, he has never acted out going to the bathroom, thankfully, but there's always a first time for everything.

I've never heard that, but thanks for the info! I'll call the vet and ask about it. I suspect it isn't the first time, because she has woken up with a wet spot on her pillow that I assumed was from licking. It didn't stink, but just had a bit of odor I assumed was "dog" odor, if you know what I mean.

Maybe you can get a black light and see if it is a urine spot and not licking. My yorkie used to lick the bed too.

Okay, your dog & DH are in cohoots. They planned it so you'd really love the new bed!

Or maybe you have a dog that is actually an intuitive healer. She sensed Dh's nightmare and
"cleansed" the spot by peeing in it & leaving her mark.

I do the same thing and yes i have acted going to the bathroom,my wife thinks im nuts,thank god theres someone else out there,but yes i have acted going to the bathroom-will just leave it at that.
But yes our samoyed that passed recently developed bladder control problems while she was sleeping and peed herself all the time,finally lost complete control and that was it.Just keep an eye out.

Our male dog did this just a few weeks ago for the very first time. It turned out to be a cortisone shot he had gotten for allergies.

He was taking care of his business so often for a few days. I really felt bad for him.

I would definately check with your vet. At the very least you would rule out a problem and a check up is never a bad idea.

Its fairly common. Ask your vet about putting her on meds(its pretty cheap) and will fix the problem.

It might not be a bad idea, since you are getting a new mattress, to use a vinyl cover to protect it. Over the vinyl cover you put your quilted mattress protector. Then your sheets, and since you know it is a problem, you could even put an old towel or moisture resistent pad in the area.
