You can do this for free if you have a device, like a phone, that supports usb otg (on-the-go). There are various apps that are free and all you need is a usb otg cable for your phone, you can usually get them on ebay for $3-4. Now if you want to go wireless then the CamRanger could do that, but you are still going to have to connect the CamRanger to your camera. I have several apps on my Android device that do this now and there are apps available for iOS as well.

There is a TeamViewer app for Android powered Samsung devices. You could connect a Samsung device to the camera as I mentioned earlier and then use TeamViewer on another device to connect to the camera using your data connection. If you already happen to have a couple of Samsung phones then you are already there. For the price of the CamRanger you could always upgrade your phone.

I've not tried this setup with two cell phones as I do not have a Samsung cell phone, only a tablet. However, I had no problem connecting my Samsung Galaxy Tab to my Canon camera. Using TeamViewer on the Samsung and then TeamViewer on my laptop or my cell phone. I had full wireless control of my camera through my wifi connection.

It's esentially the same as the CamRanger, just instead of the CamRanger connected to the camera I have a 7" tablet. If you had a Samsung phone then it would be the Samsung phone hanging there.

I see B&H has a similar product for preorder:

The "Sanho CameraMator Wireless Tethered Transmitter for Remote Control of Select Canon and Nikon DSLR Cameras" that B&H is offering can sit in the hot shoe rather than just dangling there. I bet there will be quite a few devices like this coming onto the market in the near future.

It looks great! Because sometimes shooting with tethered wire you're bound to trip over it.

Sometimes the wires are too long, sometimes they're too short.

Cameras are now hitting the market that are wifi capable.

I like KISS myself. Take the little SD card out of the camera, plug it into a reader and download. You can get a lot of pictures onto a 32GB card.

I didn't get this one but an Chinese made version called "Expert Wireless Live-View Remote Control" from Pixel. I think it's only available in Asia or on eBay.

True. And I'm all for keeping it simple. But this device isn't about storage or directly streaming to a computer. It's one method to help use your smartphone or tablet as an advanced remote for your camera wirelessly.

The newer NEX models have a similar feature available on their App store through the built-in wifi connection - allowing remote viewing and control of the camera from a smart phone device or computer. I've never tried it, but it's a neat idea...since they kicked it off on their NEX-5R and NEX-6, it's very likely going to expand to all Sony SLT and NEX models at some point in the near future.

I haven't tried or seen the Cam Ranger in action, but the idea is certainly sound and since some cameras are starting to offer it from the manufacturer, it's certainly an idea that you'll likely see more and more of.
