We are getting ready to purchase lots of camping gear and someone suggested purchasing a membership to save money. Does anyone have experience with this and if so, what do you recommend?

I have heard of Leo Adventures (save 30-40% off of big brands) and REI (10% back yearly and an occasional 20% off coupon). Just wondering what else is out there and worth it:)

We are Camping World members and get a discount that way - I think it's 30% but I could be wrong.

Ditto Traci - we're camping world members too. Paid for itself with 1 purchase!

Depends on what kind of camping gear you mean... REI isn't the place for RV gear, but if you are going backpacking it's pretty good... Camping World would be the exact opposite. Either way, if you buy outdoor clothing, shoes, etc..., reasonably often an REI membership is cheap and never expires (1 time fee of $20), you get 10% back on your reg. price purchases each year, and get coupons from time to time... You do have to spend at least $10 each year to remain a member... As an RV'er and an outdoors person, I have both REI and Camping World memberships :-) Also if you are RV'ing Camping World's membership is joint with Good Sam now, so you get campground discounts at Good Sam member campgrounds...

Just be aware that Camping World even with their membership is still more expensive than a lot of places that have sales.
We have been camping for years, have bought a few things at camping world, but most of the time find better and cheaper elsewhere.
We also purchase some things (that we seen elsewhere and know what it is) on Amazon. They have very good prices on most things. We just bought a Weber Grill (small propane) from them. Had one for years, so they are so worth it!
Happy Camping! 43 years of camping, and going strong (only a tent for one trip though;)) and now we have a MH.

If you are in the military, camping world/good Sam is free!

No, DH did a stint in military years ago, but not recent. We usually check their prices when we need something, but for the most part (even mem. price) we get a better deal elsewhere for identical item.

We are Good Sam members which now includes a Camping World membership. We just took advantage of a lifetime offer discount to military, fire, ems and police for half price. You always need to check around for pricing, but with our Good Sam membership, we get free shipping from Camping World. We also have the Good Sam Visa and use the points exclusively for fuel cards to feed the F-350. The points add up FAST!

When we bought our first fiver, I did the Camping World thing. However, after that first year, I found that its cheaper to just buy stuff online verses going through CW.

Depending on what your looking at but AdventureRV and Amazon has pretty good prices. Some of the time it's shipped free with no tax.

:thumbsup2 Agree about Amazon - that's where my dh gets all our camping needs for our MH. Best prices, no taxes ;)

Always fun to walk through camping world. When ordering on line you have to add in shipping.

We always get free shipping - no taxes - from Amazon. On the few occasions that we do have to do shipping, it's worth it because it's still cheaper.

My dh just ordered a power converter from Amazon (and he said this time he had to pay shipping - no taxes) but the price was so much cheaper than buying locally that it was still worth it.

We do occasionally walk through Camping World and pick up odds and ends or emergency items but that's it.

We've been camping (in various units) for 44 years so have lots of experience on fixing/replacing things :)
