The kids have been asking for us to go camping for awhile now and we never have been. I used to camp all the time growing up and love it but DH's family weren't much of campers and his only experiences growing up were negative. Anyway, we are surprising the kids with our first WDW trip this summer and I may have talked DH into camping for one of the days (being August in Florida I don't think I should push it much more than that). I think the pool w/ water slide looks fun and we were already thinking about eating dinner at the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue. But here is my dilemma. The rest of the time we are staying offsite. I am not sure when the best time to stay in our trip. We are getting to FL on a Sunday evening and spending Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri, and Sat and the parks with Thursday being a non-park day. Would it be better to stay at the campsite the first day so not to get things mixed up with our fast passes and magic bands? Or, would it be better to spend the night on our non-park day so we could spend more time enjoying the pool, camping, bicycling, and possibly the archery (haven't decided on that yet)?
Also, is there anyway to "rent" a tent and such down there? We could bring our own but I was just trying to think of a way to save some space in our van on the way down. I know it is only one night- but is there anything else I need to know about camping in FL in August? TIA!

Never mind on the rental suggestions. A friend in Sarasota says he can bring us his pop-up :yay:

OK, so I have another questions now. In the pictures for the tent/pop-up campsite they have a picture of a tent in the pics. Is there already a tent there or is that just an example? My friend says he could bring a pop-up, but with us only staying one night I think the tent would be fine if it is already there. Or do you have to bring your own tent? Thanks?

The tent is not already there, but Fort Wilderness does have tents and cots for rent. The illustration may be of the tents that are available for rental.

In August it will probably be quite hot. Does your friend's popup have an air conditioner? If it does have air, you may enjoy your night a lot more.

Have a fun time! Oh - I would do my first night in the campground.

Good question! He said it was a 2010 Coleman Cobalt, so I guess I will have to go look that up because I don't know anything about pop-ups ;)

We rented a pop up last August and they had it all set up with the air conditioner running when we arrived and took it all down after we left. It was wonderful...no towing, no work and lots of luxeries.

Now my only fear is that if it is TOO nice- DH won't ever want to go camping again unless we are at Disney :rotfl:

If you don't have A/C I hope you bring some fans....it will be HOT!!!!

Pretty old thread, but I was wondering how it all turned out for you. :goodvibes
Me Too.

My thoughts were that one day probably isn't really enough to "enjoy" or even get used to camping. I think you need at least 3 days. Day 1 and last day are always busy with other things (Setting up/unpacking or cleaning up/packing up) so a 3 day trip will allow for at least 1 full day to enjoy the overall experience.
