Camping at FW without a Car?

I see lots of clotheslines and quite a few hammocks every time we go.

Was there a clothesline crack down thread or was I just mis remembering something else?

We camped without a car recently.... worked out well. We signed up for an Owner's Locker and will be keeping the majority of our camping gear in storage, for easy travel in the future. The advantage of this, too, is you are supplied with a fairly good size plastic bin, to store things securely in while camping, then pack up your gear in, to have shipped back to the storage facility by the "purple van" of Owner's Locker. It is remarkably easy. We store our UL 6 tent, bags (compressed), utensils & cooking/eating supplies, electric blanket, electric heater, hygiene items, etc. What we bring home is the pads for our bags, as it's suggested they are stored open and spread out, but they fit in a carry on.

It is an EXCELLENT way to camp! We kept our food in it while at the parks and cooked out for lunches and dinners (cereal for breakfast). The top of the OL snaps shut, so it keeps out the wildlife of WDW. Good luck on your trip!

What's an Owner's Locker? Is it a program run through Disney or is it outside the park? Sorry I'm Canadian and have never heard of this.

JetBlue got back to me and I'm able to check a cooler which makes keeping drinks and some snacks on site easy. The more I look the more I realize I will be paying as I go for food. I'm a theme park junkie and I don't eat much (although I also do coasters that go 120mph so that could have something to do with it).

How is the trail side breakfast? Is it worth the money?

OL is Owners Locker, an Orlando Storage company that has as its marketing message (I have never used them) that frequent visitors to Orlando can store their items for retrieval with OL rather than take them back and forth from home. lodge described it pretty well. It probably makes sense if you will be a frequent visitor).

If you mean "Trails End" breakfast, it is the buffet breakfast at the Fort restaurant. It is about $15 plus drink/tax/tip but has a good rep as far as buffets and breakfasts and value is concerned. We have done it on the day we leave the Fort (after we've packed up in the morning and are ready to head out).

As for Trails End...it sounds pretty decent! Oh I'm getting excited and I've still got over a year to go lol!

Here is another thought, if you camp without a car.... I am thinking you would want to carry anything you would not want stolen?? On my last trip, I put DD's DS, my ipod, and the plane tickets in the room safe. Is there somewhere that stuff could be kept if you didn't want to carry it with you into the parks? I would not want to just leave it in the tent but I wouldn't want to carry all that stuff with me everyday, either.

*I am secretly plotting a way to tent camp at The Fort, but we would have to fly down, so I trying to figure out as many details as I can*

They have some sort of safes at FW too....I'm not taking too many valuables with me. I'll have my ipod, phone, wallet and e-reader. Most of those can go in my backpack without any weight. I'll have my phone in my pocket.

How do you all do it when you go?

We have been camping at the fort for over 10 years without a car. We have a motor coach and don't tow a car. When not at the Fort we rent a car were we camp. When at the fort with all there is to do at Disney don't need a car. We do rent a Disney golf car and have a ball.

I just spoke to the folks at FW and I can leave a bag of stuff with them (valuables) while I'm at the parks if I wish. Love Disney Customer Service!

Hey there, isn't Fort planning the best! We camped for the first time at the Fort in April and found ourselves without a vehicle for 3 days while the van needed some unexpected repairs (fortunately all under warranty!) We were in a rented camper so valuables weren't a problem, and had a golf cart to get around the Fort. We were in the 1500 loop and have requested it again for next year, great location! We hung a clothesline for towels and bathing suits without a problem, and the comfort stations were fantastic. The only thing the critters got into was my bag of apples next to the cooler, oh well, shame on me. And the only problem we had without a vehicle was a bit of a personal one- we ran out of beer! Fortunately our Canadian neighbors from across the street were happy to pick us up some on their trip to the Hess! Yay for camping people, always willing to help out!

OK As for as wild animals, I wouldn't worry about bears too much (even though there are some in Florida) but raccoons are smart animals when it comes into getting into things so they would be your biggest threat. That said if you bring a cooler you should be fine. As far as valuables, if you have a backpack you can probably carry your I Phone, wallet/purse with you to the parks so it would be a non issue. Of course FW can secure.
The Dining Plan I would not recommend unless you plan on lots of Character Meals. If you want to catch up on attractions at the park, eat a big breakfast at Trails End and then a midday snack and then a Counter Service at the park. Another advantage of a backpack at the park is you can bring a water bottle and top off throughout the day. This will be important if it is hot.

OK...thanks! I'm trying to figure out the cooler thing...I'm trying to decide whether to check a cooler as my second item (clothes in it for ease of packing) or if I buy one at walmart down there. Anyone know how much it costs for a cab to Walmart?

I have read that the Hess Gas Stations on site carry the cheap styrofoam ones.

Are the styrofoam ones pretty good? I'll probably only keep cold drinks and sandwich stuff in there...probably a few snacks. I probably will eat mostly on site but I do like to snack while reading or watching netflix. I can easily bring a soft sided down and that might be the best bet but I"m still covering all my options.
