I have a problem - I need to know which camera to take with us. We have a Canon 50D, a Canon XTi, and then a power shoot small compact camera that takes pretty good pictures.

If I bring one of the big cameras around I would end up bringing a few of the lenses, and then I will have another backpack to carry. What do you do with your camera bags when on rides? Should we still do the photopass thing if I bring the big camera? I also know that if we take the big camera, my husband will spend more time finding what to take pics of rather than enjoying the magic. What do I do? Aren't the Photopass Photographers good about using our camera to take pics? Will they still take our pics if we don't have a photopass card?

We got a photopass card but never intended on buying the photos. Instead, every time we had our pic taken by the photopass people we asked them to take our picture with our camera as well. So we ended up with a set of the same photos we would have gotten with photopass, but on our camera instead.

We did this on our November trip. Thanks to the photopass guy we ended up getting a GREAT family pic with Goofy dressed up as Santa, which became our Xmas card pic! We didn't purchase any photos from photopass because they always offered to take a pic with our camera. Oh and we took our Xti with us.

Unfortunately, I don't know a lot about the XTi camera, but have done lots of research on the D50. What a great camera! I plan on purchasing one later this year before our upcoming December trip, just hoping the price comes down a little bit more on them.

I have an older Canon G3 with three different lenses I usually bring with me. I carry around a camera bag that is waterproof, and then place that into a backback, makes it easier for carrying. My camera bag has a nice covering also for rain, splash mountain, etc. I also bring my backpack or camera bag with me on all the rides, they usually have some storage area or just place it between the legs and squeeze tight! If he has some major lenses you may want to look into buying a combo backpack/roller. This way he doesn't have the weight on his back the entire time.

The point and shoot powershot you have can take some pretty good pictures, unfortunately if your looking for some really superb shots with certain lenses you will definitely want the D50. Point and shoots are great for closeups, some parade shots, etc depending on your different settings (F-stop, ISO, shutterspeed). Regarding these settings your D50 is pretty much loaded with everything you can imagine, and competes with some of the better cameras on the market. You may not have as good settings on your point and shoot, which I would imagine you wouldn't since the D50 just came out last October or so. If your husband has the IS (Image Stabilizer) lenses that would be a huge plus. Also, With the point and shoot you can only zoom so far, so if he has some major zoom lenses that maybe an added bonus to take pictures of things people normally wouldn't take. Obviously, This depends on how serious of a photographer he is, and I would say if he has a D50 then he is pretty serious.

I also have an XTi- I brought the camera, the small zoom kit lens, and a 100-300 telephoto lens. I used a small lowepro camera bag that fit the above eqipment . plus there was room for another lens, and in the side pocket I was able to carry my wallet, park passes, and small incidentals so I didn't have to also carry a purse.
On the days I went to Animal Kingdom, I brought the camera, short lens, and telephoto lens- I used the kit lens on the Safari because it's easier to focus (and you don't have to use the really high ISO's you'd need with the telephoto in order to get the proper shutter speed you need in a moving vehicle.)
The telephoto was great for the Animal trails to get close ups of the gorillas, tigers, and birds.
On days I was planning on going on a lot of rides I left the big camera home and just took my pocket camera- easier to carry around if you're gonna be out all day and night, and you really don't need a telephoto in Magic Kingdom.
Epcot has lots of photo ops so I took the XTi with the kit lens on my Epcot days.
There is always someplace to stash your camera bag on the rides- either on the floor of the ride, or in a net pouch , or just holding it by your side.
And if you get tired of carrying all that equipment around, you could always store it in one of the park lockers.
Have fun and take lots of great photos!

ETA: The photo pass photogs will always take a photo of you with your own camera, as will the CM's with the characters.

May be some day.:lmao: :rotfl2:

Well a guy can dream...

This is the first time i have been to disney with my 'big' camera (XT) and i am renting a 24-105mm 4L IS for the occasion. I thought this would be the best walking aournd lens for the trip. Plus my wife just can't see me spending thousands on the lenses i really want....

Have a great trip and no matter what camera you take i am sure your trip will be magical.:wizard:

We purchased an 18-200 IS lens specifically for our trips to Disney and it's become our #1 used lens for everything. Although we take the kit lens and a telephoto with us (and a wide angle too), they mostly end up staying in the room except for rare occasions. The multi-purpose lenses aren't the best for every application, but as advertised, are pretty good for a wide range of things.

We have an Canon Rebel XT.

This past trip I took my XSi and three lenses (one attached, two in the side lens compartments of my three-compartment camera bag) and several filters and white balance lens cap and two batteries every day. My bag isn't a backpack, but one you wear with the strap going across your body (hanging from the opposite shoulder) and the bag hanging at your side. I use a good neoprene strap that makes the bag weightless so it can be carried around all day.

I used my 55-250mm IS lens for most shots, especially on the Kilimanjaro Safari ride. I used my 18-55mm IS and 75-200mm IS L-glass lenses for some shots, as well.

On my second-to-last trip, I took my XTi with one lens in a smaller bag.

Oh, and I also used PhotoPass and will be buying the CD (pre-purchased it). I used my camera for photos of things, not ppl, as I just didn't have the time for that. Plus, I like the PhotoPass borders. And during my solo times, I needed PhotoPass, anyway - I don't hand off my camera to CMs, strangers, or PhotoPass folks!

Hello mamamac .... On our last trip (4 years go) I took our big honking SLR pentax and one zoom lens ... got great photos and still haIf you d lots of fun. BUT ... hauling a big camera is not something I enjoyed doing. For our upcoming April trip I now own a great little Nikon digital and I'm traveling light and still expect to get great pics. And if you also have in-laws, kids and neighbors ... packing light would be a good way for you to go.

And for the photopass folks ... let them take your pictures with their cameras (and yours if they do). Then check the photos on-line and if there is a breathtaking group photo ... you'll just have to buy it as one last memory. The layout stuff they do on the photos is fun!
